- I turned on my Dell XPS 15 9560 laptop yesterday and most of the start-up programs didn't load and there were lots of error messages saying "The code execution cannot proceed because MSIMG32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix the problem." I could still browse the files and open Chrome, but most programs didn't load.
- I tried a system restore but weirdly the only Restore Point available was yesterday morning, and when I tried that it couldn't complete because of error (0x81000204) "Failed while scanning the file system on the C: The drive might be corrupt."
- I tried running CHKDSK but that wouldn't even start because of errors.
- I thought it might have crashed during a windows update so tried a windows update. It started update "1809 amd64 2019-03" which took a couple of hours. The update seemed to complete but now when it boots to windows all I get it a black screen with a mouse pointer, and a small windows in the top right saying, "Loading Personal Settings (Not responding)".
- If I boot into the Windows helper menu nothing works. I've tried Restore, CHKDSK, safe mode. The only thing I've not tried is Reset Windows, which claims to same your personal data and set windows back to factory. I do backups, but I still have a load of recent work and important photos that are only on this drive. They are saved in C:\Storage\Photos\2019\... and some in C:\users\me\documents + pictures.
- If I Reset Windows is my data safe? Is it reliable or should I remove the SSD and somehow backup the data first?
- What could have caused this problem?
