This may well belong in the CPU or Cooling sections, but I am not certain that I am right about the source of the problem so I will post it here.

I have been getting very high temperatures on my Q6600 using a stock cooler. By high I mean in the 85 -> 95 range most of the time. I am aware that this is partially caused by using the fairly crap stock cooler, but I cannot justify spending any more money on my computer to myself yet. I am not bothered about high temperatures as long as it works and is safe for the hardware.

However, the CPU fan started getting very, very noisy and I assumed this was because of the high temperatures and the fan compensating. It was suggested it to me that to have such high temperatures, even with a stock cooler, I must have some how bodged the cooler installation. So, I decided to reseat the cooler.

Which I just tried. Now the computer wont boot. The fans start spinning etc., and it just powers down. If I clear the CMOS it will boot once and POST, but power down instantly at a random time after that (I got in to BIOS once, it is not always at the same time). It will then not boot again until I reclear the CMOS.

What could be causing this? How can I fix it? Thanks.

EDIT: It seems the longer I leave it before trying to reboot the further I get in to the boot sequence. Could this mean that its is powering down due to over heating? (The longer I leave it, the more it cools down etc.)

As far as I can tell, yes.

Just to clarify, to fit the heat sink I should:
1. Line up all the pins/holes
2. Make sure all the arrows on each pin are pointing towards the cpu/cooler.
3. Push down firmly until I hear a click on each pin.

Or am I doing something wrong?

Right, I have taken the mobo from the case to try and get the cpu cooler fitting properly. I cannot seem to get the pins to ram home for the life of me.

Could someone please tell me how its meant to be done/what Im doing wrong? (see above)

i would still bin the stock cooler and get an aftermarket one , the freezer 7 pro is a cheap and very effective cooler which puts the stock cooler to shame ;)
