Problems acessing old xp install...

I have a Crosshair V and it runs Windows 7 without any problems, but trying to load into an old install of XP x64 is impossible, and it crashes. I have tried to change to ide mode in bios, but it won't work.
I wonder if there is any way to modify the old install to do achi, as I suspect the problem lies there. Or if flipping the bios setting from Achi to ide is not enough and I should do more in bios to run XP?
I have a lot of stuff on the old XP that I'd like to access and thought it would be nice to just dualboot it, but it will not run, it just restarts. Inserting my xp disk will yield a blue screen with the following error:"STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034, 0×00000000, 0×00000000)." Wich seems to be related to xp needing ide state.
Another alternative is ofcourse to rip some of the guts out of this machine and use them on an older board, but it is such a hassle, compared to hopefully just doing it via software.

Any help appreciated.

Cant you just boot into Windows 7 and access the data on the XPx64 disc from there - why do you need to boot the machine?

Also, Safe mode (F8) boot and uninstall the AHCI driver is a possibility.

Good luck either way.

I found out I had to change more settings in the bios. I can now log into my old xp through ide. But I would like be able to set it to AHCI so i won't have to change the setting everytime I want to boot into one or the other.
Had had some files on the old xp I could not just access directly on the disk. I had to be logged into xp. I also seems to have a problem with watching tv on windows 7. The sound is out of sync. Apparently I am not the only one.

So my problem now is getting my old xp install to change to AHCI mode from IDE...

that's not true. all you need to do is take ownership of the drive/folders from within windows 7. see here...

although that is written for XP, i think the dialogs for 7 are the same.

if you really want to boot into XP, then leave it in IDE mode. it's no great loss not running in AHCI mode.
