problems after install XP-pls help

Hi,
My neighbour bought a Dell computer with Vista pre-installed. She hated Vista so asked me to install XP on it. So today I installed Windows XP. The install went fine until she tried to install her isp. XP could not detect the modem/router.

Any suggestions pls?

I have no idea who the hardware manufacturers are.
