Problems Booting Windows

Problem started a few weeks ago when every time i switched my pc on one of my hard drives started making a clicking sound. It would click and the pc would restart or hang taking about 5 mins to boot. Sometimes telling me a file in Windows was corrupted, eventually it would boot up though.

Finally my pc wouldn't boot into windows anymore, and i couldn't do anything with the hdd. Took it round to my mates to test, it wouldn't boot but i could still use the drive in windows when slaved.

So i bought a new hdd, now plugged in on its own its fine, boots into windows straight away (fresh install). But with the other older hdd in it hangs or crashes again on boot up, and with my dvd writer plugged in it does the same. But if i can get it to boot up i can still use both devices as normal. Can't try changing the ide cables because i don't have any spare, so what i thought to be a hdd problem could be something else.

Any ideas fellas?

Uninstall the IDE controller from the device manager, then reboot, it should pick up the driver when you login again and see if that helps. (Basically reinstalling the IDE controller)

Try another cable.

If the problem HDD is problematic in both PC's though, i'd say its proberly time to chuck it away or RMA, if still possible.
