Problems connecting to certain websites

So I'm currently experiencing connection issues to certain websites, it's not isolated to any one website.

For example I just clicked on my bookmark to reddit.com and cannot connect, even sometimes I can't search for anything on google by entering a query into the search bar of my browser. Other websites work fine and connect first time, so this isn't really a problem with any specific patterns that I've noticed.

My ISP is AOL and I currently use a Belkin F5D9630 router and connect to it wirelessly.

Obviously I don't expect there to be a one click solution to this but It's become a lot worse recently and I'd like to get to the route of the problem.

I've used a web snapshot service to check that the websites are up and none of the websites that I've had issues connecting to at the time have been down.

I really have very little idea of where to start looking for the causes of the problem but I'd like to finally find the cause and stop it from happening.

If anyone could point me in the right direction of where to start looking for the cause of the problem or give me guidance on what to do that'd be great.

I'm not sure if I've provided enough information but if you need anything else just ask.

And before someone posts a lmgtfy link I have googled the problem but found nothing definitive without trawling through hundreds of pages and trying lots of different things, I'd just like a solution that won't take me a vast amount of time to get working.

Thankyou.

Ironically I can't connect to that website at the moment.

I didn't buy the router or subscribe to AOL although I can change either of them if they'll give me a better service, obviously this is a very broad question but could my router and service provider be part of the problem? I take it from your wincing that neither of the two are very good?

Edit:

Changing to googles public DNS seems to have solved the problem for the moment...I'm also interested in upgrading my router, dd-wrt compatible routers generally have good feedback and reviews due to the functionality..any recommendations?

I'm less than a mile from the exchange as the crow flies but I'd assume the actual difference of the cable is somewhat different. I see talktalk is the only provider with LLU presence, so would BT or Talktalk be on equal grounding or would one of them be preferential over other providers?

I've been looking at various deals and bt seem to do quite a good phone/broadband deal which will be about half the cost per month (roughly £45 instead of the £100ish im paying for my landline & broadband atm)for exactly the same (if not faster) line speed than I'm getting at the moment.

Talk talk is the only llu provider on my local exchange. I'm already with bt for the phone line so it seems the easiest thing to do is change my broadband subscription over to them and take out a phone package with inclusive calls (I'm still paying on a time basis for every call that's made at the moment and I should see significant savings, I'm averaging £70 a month for then land line alone )

I haven't come across any proposed roll out of fttc from any provider at my exchange yet so that's another reason why I've chosen BT.

Ill probably get a new dd-wrt router as well just because I can and I'd like something to tinker with.

Does anybody have any suggestions or should I give the go ahead to bt to start the changeover process?

Thanks

I don't know if its the case these days, but I heard some real horror stories in the past about people trying to cancel AOL. Might want to read up on that so you're prepared.

How are you paying £100 a month?

I picked BT as my ISP, they cost a little more than many competitors, but for me they've always been rock solid stable.

2x ADSL routers that I like..

Billion 7800DXL (replaced the 7800N that I'm familiar with)
Asus DSL-N55U (if you get this, do a search for my threads about using the latest firmware!)

I've not found a DDWRT router with ADSL modem that has great specs, ie wireless-N and gigabit network.

I'm paying £30 for my Aol subscription, 8mb line speed, no usage limits.

I get billed quarterly for my phone at the moment, each bill is in the region of £200 so roughly £70 per month for the phone (I'm pretty sure I'm getting billed on a per second basis)

I put together this little graph of the my past 5 bills, I broke down the individual bill for the land line and the mobile cost for the 3 month period.

I know the dates aren't in chronological order.

This is how I'm coming to the figure of about £100 a month

Roughly £70 a month for the phone and £30 a month is about £100 a month for both services.

The inclusive calls package I'm looking to get should massively reduce the fee I pay for land line calls each month, The cost for calling to a mobile should be about half of what I'm paying per second at the moment for each call made.

Overall I expect to spend about £50 a month for the Phone service, Broadband Service & Line rental

So over a 3 month period I should be spending roughly £150 instead of roughly £290.

Would it be an option for me to get an ADSL modem and some form of DD-WRT router that isn't ADSL specific?

Ah right, I never use my house phone.

Yup, you could get an ADSL modem and a normal 'cable' router will work perfectly. It will cost more though.

The ASUS and Billion have all the main features I was used to from my old Tomato router (similar to DDWRT), just presented in a different way.
