Hey everyone,

Right, since about 2 days ago Ive been having problems with my PC- its been working fine for absolutely ages (months) and now it keeps locking up.

The problem happens when I play music or videos (for example an mp3 file using winamp/wmp or a youtube video)- I can play around a minute and a half and then the sound just cuts out dead. If I close and replay the song/video then my pc will just lock up- the mouse will freeze, no audio, keyboard unresponsive and the only thing I can do is press the reset button on my keyboard. have also noticed that upon opening winamp ill just get a "winamp.exe has encountered an error...." windows notice- and then if I can open it it will give me a DirectX error. As Ive said its only just started happening, and everything was working fine before.

havent upgraded any hardware recently- the only thing thats different is windows update downloaded a "silverlight 1.0" update and I downloaded the latest winamp because it wasnt working.

System spec is abit ip35pro, q6600, auzentech prelude, 8 gig ram, vista 64

Any ideas what could be causing the problem and any ideas on how to fix it?
Any help appreciated
Cheers

It appears Silverlight IS to do with media things- not sure how/why it would mess things up.

At the minute my pc is stable- nothing overclocked. I can leave it for hours and it wont lock up- only after playing music/video it will. Im really confused! Thanks for the suggestion though RJC

My pc is in my room, as it has been for around 3months now and it runs at 32-38 degrees idle

As i said i can leave it on for hours... but as soon as I play something media related it just locks up (even if ive just turned it on)

Just managed to watch 2:49 of the latest Yahtzee video before it locked up again.

And its just locked up during a game of Counterstrike: Source. So I cant use my PC to play games, watch vids or listen to music

My build has been working for 3-4months~ in its current state with Vista 64 and about 6-8 months before that using XP. Its not overheating as it doesnt go over 40degrees when idling. And I havent done anything to my set up minus using Windows Update and this Silverlight thing. Drivers are the latest- and have been working well since installed (few weeks ago)... so not sure why this kinda problem would just crop up like that

Really not sure what could be wrong. Does anybody have any ideas? I really dont want to format my pc!
