Problems install McAfee after moving Users directory from SSD to second drive using directory juncti

I recently built a new machine for my father-in-law.

It is based around an i5 2500k and overclocked to 4.4. Everytime is running stable and cool. The primary drive is a Crucial M4 64Gb. Everything was configured and working and the final part of the build was to move the existing 500gb hard drive in and reformat is as a secondary drive for data etc.

Based on a number of suggestions I moved his Users directory to the d: drive and created a directory junction in the Users directory on the c drive to the one of the d drive (using mklink /j). This worked perfectly and everything was happy. That was until I had to reinstall his McAfee Internet Security Suite (I had AVG installed during the build and configuration). The install of McAfee was failing with pre-checks indicating that a threat was detected.

After much pulling of hair I discovered via the McAfee Virtual Technician (don't get me started on that one) that the problem was it accessing the temp directory within the user profile. This tends to indicate that McAfee could not cope with the directory junction.

When I moved the User back to the c: drive and removed the link and the install ran through and completed without any problems.

I haven't tried moving it back to the d: after the install, if McAfee can't cope with it during install it could be unpredictable during normal running.

After much searching I haven't found any reference to this issue. Has anyone experienced this issue before? or whether there is a better way to move the Users directories?

A) Why on earth are you using mklink when you can simply move the user folders to the other drive?

B) Why on earth are you using McAfee?

Do you mean via the Location tab on the folder properties. if so, my understanding isthat you could only move certain folders using this method. Creating a link allows you to move the entire Users folder.

I can't stand McAfee myself. But unfortunately the machines owner has had it for years and he has over 2 years left on the subscription.

Yeh, but that should be sufficient for your needs and alleviates the issue you're having with McAfee if you cannot persuade the owner to move to something else.

Thanks for your thoughts, I will probably go with that approach in the interim. I am already working on persuading him to move to something else.
