When you buy a game on the Windows store you have no control where the game is installed and by default the Store installs it on the main drive which for me and I imagine many others is an SSD which is not big enough to hold many games. My SSD holds the OS and all the programs I use such as notepad, paint net etc. It also holds Steam, U-play, Origin & GOG but those programs install the actual games on one of three additional Hard drives I use, which is what I need any Store games if I buy them to do.
At a Microsoft forum I've started a thread to ask how it's done and one Microsoft engineer gave me a link to the first set of instructions down below which were on a Win 8 thread and then another Microsoft engineer posted the second set of instructions that are down below. Has anybody that has bought a game through it managed to change the install directory for the Windows store and if so was it done with either of these instructions?
The first instructions.
1, Close the Windows Store app.
2, Make a new folder in the desired location. By example “D:\WindowsApps”.
3, Run regedit as administrator
4, Create a backup of your registry just in case.
5, In regedit go to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\Appx”
6, Take ownership of this path and everything below it (inheritance).
7, Edit the value of “PackageRoot” to your desired location. By example “D:\WindowsApps”
8, Start the Windows Store app.
9, Install apps.
10, Run apps.
The second instructions.
1. Press Win+R to bring up the Run dialog box.
2. Type ‘regedit’ and hit Enter.
3. Navigate to the following location.
4. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Appx
5. Next right-click Appx and choose ‘Permissions’ from the context menu.
6. The Permissions for Appx box will open. You will now have to take full control and ownership of the registry key.
To assign the permissions follow these steps:
. Open the registry key till Parameters and right-click on it.
. Select Permissions.
. In the Permissions Window, click on the account name under Group or User names.
. Then click on the box next to Full Control.
. Click on Apply and OK.
7. Edit the PackageRoot registry key by right-clicking on it and selecting Modify.
8. Enter the new path of the folder where you want the Windows Apps to be installed.
Note: Do note that you will not be able to update the apps installed prior to changing the default location, since these apps will still have their data in the original location.
