hi guys n gals
just built a m8 of mine the following system,

asus p5q pro motherboard
intel core 2 duo E8400 3ghz fsb 1333 6mb l2 cache
XFX GTX260 XXX Edition 896MB GDDR3 Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E
Pioneer DVR-216DBK 20x DVD±RW Dual Layer Internal SATA Black X2
Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB Hard Drive SATA II 7200rpm *32MB Cache*
Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 1066MHz/PC2-8500 XMS2 Dominator Memory Xtreme Performance Kit with Fan CL5 2.1 V X2
Antec Nine Hundred 900 - Gaming Case with 200mm Top Fan
Arctic Power 700W PSU - With PCI-E, 4x SATA, 20+4, ATX12V, 8pin +12V Connectors - Retail Boxed

INSTALLED WINDOWS VISTA X64 (because of 8gb ram)

the problem is the system runs 3 times worse than my 2.4 dual core
it freezes for no reason ai suite reports the cpu running at 2 ghz on a multiplier of 6 yet in bios it says 3.00 ghz at a multiplier of 9 i updated the bios to 1306 to no avail but now down loaded this morning 1406 hopefully this may solve some issues ?
any advice would be really helpful and appreciated.

Have you had a look in Task manager at the performance tab to see what it's doing when it freezes? Also on newly built Vista systems it will start indexing the files on the hard disk but should only do this when the system is idle so is the hard drive being thrashed? This should stabilize over the course of a few days though.

You might need to setup memory voltage and timmings in the BIOS, upped the Northbridge voltage a touch as your running with all slots used.
Does the BIOS have EIST & C1E as these are also part of Intel Speed Step.

managed to get intel speed step sorted, using the + - buttons and not the enter key as told to do so in the bios, arrrrrrrrgh right got the system stable by changing the dram voltage to 1.84, nb voltage to 1.12, and the sb voltage to 1.20, now the system doesnt bsod or just restart for no reason, my next question then is this when i first installed the board, i put the sata hdd on sata 1 the orange connector, and everything was fine but now the motherboard will not see the hard drive on the orange or white connector, should it have been on here ?, also when the machine boots it briefly flashes no hard drive found ,is this because my storage solutions are set to ide and not ahic is this right ?
thanx for any support.

Hi Corrsa, I have literally just put my system together using this motherboard. I thought that the hard drive and dvd SATA drives went in the red slots? The orange one is esata? Will have to check the manual... The interesting thing is I am having trouble with loading the operating system for the first time it will not read the bootable media? Did you have any issues? I too am using a seagate harddrive 32mb cache.

OK - I don't normally get annoyed, but having spent several hours scouring MSDN for reasons why a Windows XP disc might not boot, I discover that it's a likely a hardware problem!

At the risk of coming over all RTFM, don't put the boot HDD or Optical drive on the funny coloured SATA ports. ASUS have rather wonderfully taken the shiny new ICH10R controller which is SATA only and added a pair of PATA channels with an add-on controller from Promise Corp. If you have anything plugged in to the PATA port, nothing will occur on the orange or white SATA connectors.

This is also something of a pet hate of mine - the use of the term IDE to describe PATA drives. Both SATA and PATA are IDE disks, it's just the interface on the back that makes them different. I think if people understood that, they might be more awake to realising that plugging something into a PATA port may well knock out a SATA drive and vice versa. Part one of the rant over.

And then, just make everything even more unclear, ASUS have added a further BIOS level function to the orange and white SATA ports. If you have nothing attached to the PATA connector and two drives attached to the orange and white SATA connectors, Drive XPert will attempt to back up the Orange SATA drive to the white SATA drive all by itself. This is sort of explained on page 3-40 of the manual, but I would have thought that it's only common sense to think 'Why am I using the only two oddly coloured SATA connectors, why don't I try the ones that are all the same colour, and three times as many of them?"

Anyhoo - plug all your SATA drives into RED ports and I think things will work much better for you. And all ranted out now, thank you!

hi i have had the same problem do not plug any sata devices into the orange and white connectors as WJA96 has already mentioned.
If so you wont see any devices in bios only use the avaliable red sata connectors to connect sata devices

THANX for the advis guys, i now have nothing attached to the orange, or white sata connectors on this board. what i would be interested to know next, is how to get some more performance from the board. without killing it. also efit 2005 i had no problems with windows vista 64 bit installing, once i did not use the wrong sata ports any more. hope this thread helps you too.

one thing you should always check is actually on the ram chip, the voltage on it and actually setting that voltage in the bios, I had issues with that once when on the website states for example 1.6 but on the chip its 1.7. Always set the voltage thats on the chip not whats stated on the site when you buy it, it helps.

also look at this website for bios updates http://www.xtremesystems.org/FORUMS/showthread.php?t=200109 the modded bios'es are great.
