Ugh, having a hard time with my new machine today!

First, my Blu-ray drive refuses to accept discs. It is a stupid slot-loading drive. Avoided them for years because of this very reason, kinda hoped it wouldn't be an issue these days! Looks like that will be an RMA job.

Now my computer is randomly shutting off! Done it twice in the last hour. I am thinking it is a hardware issue as there is never anything in the Windows logs and no bluescreen. FaH etc etc all run fine and no lost WUs so I don't think it is instability either, though will reset my BIOS to defaults if it happens again.

Trying to pinpoint what it might be but I have no idea... the monitor goes black, the LEDs in my mouse and keyboard power off but all the fans stay running. My CPU isn't getting hot - highest I see usually is 83C.

I am ruling out a PSU problem for now, as the last time I had a dodgy PSU the whole system would stop and restart, not just USB and monitor.

Kinda peed off at the moment as it has been running like a charm all week. :(

Yes I have disabled auto-restart. Even if it was enabled something would be in the log regarding whatever caused Windows to crash.

However, this is not the case. The only error entries are improper shutdowns - which happens when I have to hold the power button to reboot.

I am not suspicious of the PSU just yet, but I have been monitoring the voltages using one of the tools that came with my motherboard. The 3.3V and 12V are rock-solid at 3.328 and 12.492 even under 100% load. The 5V twitches between 4.999 and 5.026V once every 20-30 minutes. That is well within tolerance iirc.

My current theory is either the 5870 or the motherboard. The reason I suspect the 5870 is there is an issue with the 5800 series randomly crashing now and then, even when idle. Your graphics card going **** up can easily cause the rest of the system to go nuts. It has crashed 3 times today in the space of 3 hours, the last time the USB devices stayed lit.

The other possitibility is the motherboard shorting out. Less likely as I imagine it wouldn't even boot if this were the case.

No crashes since my post however even with FaH running and a VM, so I am almost certain it isn't instability.

Thanks for that Happy.

It appears I have the same issue as everyone else, the fact my 5870 is pre-overclocked probably isn't helping. Will back off my OC if it falls over again. Might also up my PCI-E frequency up to 103.

This is very beneficial when taking an i7 920 over 200bsck, but is warned against in various places if you use an ssd.

:(

Although, my SSD is plugged into a SATA 6gbps port which may use a different controller/bandwidth than regular SATA.. still a problem, you reckon? I don't know how these things are all interlinked :o

Bloody thing crashed again!

I just don't understand. How can I go 2 days of solid 100% folding and then start seeing problems?

I might just RMA this card and get an nVidia. If the problem goes away - great. If not at least I have taken something off the list. I have lowered my OC to 3.8GHz. Was meant to be 4GHz but the Turbo thingy doesn't want to kick in with a x19 multi lol.

Shall see if we get anymore crashes. Having so much bad luck with my new build.

I need to RMA an HDD that arrived damaged, I need to RMA this piece of crap Blu-Ray drive, now looks like I am RMAing my GPU.

Good job I'm not Marine or I probably would have chainsawed this ******* in half by now! :p

I can report that after 13 hours no crashes so far on 3.8GHz. If it lasts until this evening I will up it to 4GHz and see if it stays stable.

I might put in one my of GTX260s and run it at 4.2GHz and see if the same issue occurs.

It has now been a solid 24 hours since my last crash. I have been running at 3.8GHz and folding the whole time. Tomorrow I will bump up my OC to 4GHz and see what happens.

Anyone know of any good guides to voltage settings for various parts of my system? It might be worth bumping up a few if my OC really is to blame for the GSODs I get. CPU and RAM is clearly fine at their current voltages. The NB or SB might need some tickling maybe?
