Problems recovering USB drive

Been charged with recovering a memory stick. It's buggered. I have tried using GetDataBack but for the first time in my experience, it can't get passed the scanning stage (stalls on 6%). The drive is recognised and you can view the folders but it does take a while to do anything, copying files off seems to start working but it gets stuck. Any options? Some rather important data on there

Is it a genuine memory stick? Some of the fake ones on ebay overstate their capacity, so there may not be any data to recover.

Try a Linux live CD, I've found Linux more robust for recovering data from iffy USB drives in the past

Wow that took a long time. Tried iCare advanced files recovery, 8 hours later and it appears to have recovered them. Looking through remotely at work and a lot seems to be there, in fact there are over 6GB of files despite the drive been a 4GB one. Will go through them with the owner tonight.

R Studio is great for restoring data, heavy price tag though.

I might have jumped the gun a little. The 6GB of files contained loads of random temp files and quite a lot of stuff was missing. Another program showed all of the contents but the files/folders that were missing from the iCare scan were crossed out. I guess this means the missing stuff can't be recovered?
