Problems staying connected to online game/games?

I'm having an issue staying connected to a co-op game on Borderlands 3 - no issues with my internet dropping because I'd remaining connected and chatting on Discord but after 2-3 minutes in game I'm just dropping out and get a message saying I've lost connection to the online server!?!? (everyone else can stay connected no problem!)

I was willing to think this was just an issue with Borderlands 3 but I've also had issues recently staying connected to a mate of mine's server for 7 Days to Die!

It's a similar situation, I can see the server and connect fine but then after a few minutes i get disconnected (although in 7DtD the game just crashes rather than me just being disconnected!)

It's almost as if I'm connecting fine but then my connection isn't sufficient to stay connected, like something is blocking the up and down stream - can anyone this of anything that could be causing this sort of issue??

Don't assume your internet or network connection is fine because discord is staying connected, there are different tolerances for disconnects in games v chat utilities.

Anti-cheat modules or games may drop you to prevent you warping around the map etc If you are on wifi, try going cabled or checking wifi channel congestion etc.

Anything in the router logs about it disconnecting? Normally that would kick you off discord though. Since it's happening in more than one game it's likely not your mates PC or service side.

Had a thought, you checked power saving settings on your network/wifi cards?

Might be worthwhile checking for manufacturer updates or new drivers.

Thanks for the replies - my internet is fed via some homeplugs and in all honesty they have always been rock solid in the past!

I've updated my graphics drivers and Windows is up to date as far as I can tell

Don't get me wrong, the issue with the 2 different games might not be connected but it's too similar an issue for me to be sure!

I'm going to try connecting with a mate on another game and see if I have a similar issue!

Check that the correct ports are open on your router is all I can think of. I used to have an issue exactly the same as this when I placed DCS World and it was because I didn't have the correct ports opened up.

found your problem

I couldn't disagree more to be honest - I've used powerline adapters for 15 years and they have always been rock solid!

I can count the number of times I've even had to reset them in all that time on one hand!

I'll have a look at ports but wouldn't closed ports mean connecting in the first place wouldn't happen??

Unlikely to be ports on your router, wouldn't work - certainly can't see it causing intermittent issues.

Powerlines is a call though, yes they work - but they can overheat and are susceptible to interference from other devices. I've used them for years but found that in a group one of them can cause problems with others if it becomes wonky. Manufacturers also usually have advice for intermittent connections on powerlines which confirms it is a thing: https://www.tp-link.com/us/support/faq/2230/
Powerline energy saving etc are starting points.

Okey dokey - bit of an update on this issue and I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas I could try?

Basically I believe I've ruled out any issue with my powerline adapters - I've tried 2 different sets and that made no difference and so I tried my laptop with the WiFi turned off and connected via the exact same ethernet cable that my PC uses - and lo and behold, no connection issues!

I've bought V Rising and believe I'm experiencing the same issues as I was having on Borderlands 3 - basically I get a "Connection Issues" notification in-game and I "rubber band" back a few seconds - but the connection itself never actually fails (and the likes of Discord is uninterrupted!)

I'm really struggling to think of what the issue could be - I've tried turning off my Windows firewall and have also updated my motherboard BIOS without these making any difference!

Any ideas anyone????

Get a wifi card for your PC.
Sounds like you've narrowed it down to your PC network card tbh.

Even a cheap USB wifi adaptor would be enough for testing.

I did wonder about this but the ethernet cable goes into the motherboard (ie. not a separate network card) - I guess I can't do much more than update the BIOS and the various Windows updates?

I'm not overly keen on using a WiFi connection as my PC is at the opposite end of the house to the router!

It'll be your router blocking ports.

Some online games go to a more "peer to peer" based connection when you join a team or similar action, whilst will seemingly work fine otherwise as will the rest of your internet.

Certain exceptions are normally built in, Steam, discord etc depending on your router, which is why some things will work whilst others won't.

You need to look into forwarding ports, but to be honest it can be a pain in the arse to the point where I eventually gave up and just set got a different router.

Surely if it was a port problem it would either work entirely or not at all - as opposed to the current situation where I can connect fine but then it sort of "delays" and I get the rubber banding?

Plus my PC has always worked fine before and I've not changed the router or any of the settings in there??

Nope, I had issues with that would work sometimes and not othertimes, or work for 30 seconds until blocked, or get similar janky issue as you described.

What router do you have?

This was common in the 90s, incredibly rare these days that the end user is expected to make any sort of change like this. Absolutely worth checking the router config but should be no need to forward ports etc. Laptop worked fine and it's on wifi so likely DHCP and wouldn't be getting anything forwarded. It is possible that he's forwarding something without knowing it to the wrong place though.

As janky as it sounds, you could throw a second router at the end of the ethernet you've got for your PC, and then wifi to that router - someone else will be able to tell you what this is called as it has completely slipped my mind. It sounds like a something is up with your ethernet adapter on your PC, if you happen to have a second router you can do what I suggested and see if WiFi is much more stable with the router being close by. If WiFi doesn't help, there's something else going on.

OK, - a quick update on this - whilst this issue has been going on I've also had occasion to update my motherboard BIOS and as part of that I've had to change a few settings, one of which is to enable "NVME RAID mode" in an attempt to try and get my M.2 SSD to show up in the list of bootable drives in the BIOS......and having done this, believe it or not, it appears to have solved my intermittent connection problems - I've played for a period of time on both V Rising and Borderlands 3 connecting to a mate of mines game and have not experienced any of the issues I was having!?!?!

Don't get me wrong I glad it seems to be fixed but is there any earthly reason why this setting (which I didn't even think I should enable as I'm not running RAID!) would make any difference at all to a completely separate problem???

Surely the BIOS update would be the probable cause for fix, not the RAID change….?

You'd think so but no, I tried playing the online games multiple times after the BIOS update and still had the connection problems!?!?

I just can't imagine why the issue seems to have been solved - and having spent the last couple of hours playing V Rising with no connection issues at all, I'm starting to think it has sorted it! Bizarre!
