Problems with 1080p films - dual core usage?

Hey all,

After a recent upgrade, I can now watch 1080p films with ease and in all the glory my 1600*1200 display will allow. :D

My spec is:

Opteron Dual Core 165 @ 2250mhz
1Gb PC3200 Ram
Radeon X800 XT PE. 256mb

However, occasionally, I get problems with the videos that really bug me. Now I'm a 'codec pack' person, so I may be largely to blame for it...

Today, for instance, I was trying to watch Serenity (MKV, X264) at 1080p on Windows Media Player Classic. On the taskbar, the ffdshow and Haali Spliter icons were showing, so I presume these were being used. For some reason, I got occasional split-second stalls, and suffered from a varying slight sound-sync issue that was noticeable throughout. When I went to look at the task manager cpu usage, I saw:

And it appears the cores are not being used very evenly. The problems seem to be worse when the right core goes to 100%, as if it's trying to live with only 1 core.

I tried my second choice, VLC, and while the CPU spread was better, I got massive artifacting problems and even larger sessions of picture lag.

So, what could be my problem? Are there meant to be both ffdshow and Haali going at the same time? :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated! :D

Try using some better media player software that use DirectX output for hardware acceleration. VLC is pretty good. I've played a few HD movies with that on my PC being output to a 42inch LCD and it was very smooth. CPU usage did hover around 50-70% though

The x264 decoder in FFdshow isn't multi threaded which is why it only uses one core.

I've disabled it in the codec pack so it no longer appears on the task bar in playing. Things are moderately better, but the problems still there to a degree. :(

Got a 1080P H264 sample, ATI X300, 1080p screen. FFDSHOW + Haali splitter installed also.

Does similar, Core 0 at 5%, Core 1 at 80%. No stuttering however not fast action scene. I guess have to wait for multi-threaded FFDSHOW support?
