Problems with a DFI SLI-DR

Hi there,

Bought a DFI SLI-DR second hand to replace an ASUS A8N-E that I broke, but I'm having quite a few little problems.

Mobo was installed with a completely fresh install of Vista x64. Problems are:

- Random shutdowns. After a while of being on the pc (2 hours ish) the computer just randomly turns itself off. I first thought overheating but everything seems fine. After the second time my DVD-RW totally disappeared from my computer?

- Stalls in post. When the system starts up it sometimes stalls and various points during post.

- Restart issues. When restarting sometimes the computer will just hang and my moniter will just stay in standby.

- Keyboard issues in bios. I have both a usb and ps2 keyboard to hand and sometimes 1 will work and the other wont or they both wont work at all.

Could all this be to do with Vista? What about jumper configurations? Flicking through the manual reveals lots of different jumper settings. I tried updating the bios with winflash but I get an error saying "onboard bios not award bios!".

Can anyone help? Sorry for the poor formatting and grammer, I'm in a rush.

Many thanks :)

Have you tried using with just the ps2 keyboard and not using usb?

Try updateing your bios using the floppy method :)

You made sure all the cables are insreted and secure too?

Have you got all the power cables plugged in (there is a small 3 pin one by the gfx slot). Have you run memtest in the bios?
The ram timings are quite aggressive at default, try loosening them.
There is a boot cd with lots of different bios, it was called TMODS BOOT CD.
It was on the old DFI-STREET site, not sure what the site is called now.

Hope you get it working ok, my sli-d's run no probs 2yrs+
Running vista 32 atm.

check your northbridge temps.....the horrible little fan on it is prone to breaking.

the SLI-dr can be a difficult board to set up. I recommend the 618-3 BIOS (flash via floppy)which i know from experience is stable. Be careful with your ram timings at first until you are stable

Havent got a floppy drive, thats why I was using the winflash method. If I find that the bios is causing the problem I will get one.

Yes, all cables are inserted and secure.

Going to look for the CD now, hopefully it helps. I ran memtest 3 times and passed 3 times.

The temps are fine and the fan is working ok. I'll have a look for that BIOS now.

I turned on the pc earlier then after 2-3 minutes I had another random shutdown, so it's definitely not overheating.

yer your right, extra power is for the m/b mainly if your using sli..

This problem your having could be memory,, these m/b had a real problem running Corsair memory in duel channel, i know yours is Geil, but it might be a good idea to remove one memory mudule and see how it runs..

Am I right in thinking the molex power connector above the chipset fan is for graphics cards?[/QUOTE]

Think changing the Ram to 2T has fixed everything. Had no crashes or hanging. The USB keyboard issue was happening because it needed to be enable in the bios. Happy days!

cool :)

Maybe the Geil uses Hynix ram which is well known to be hated by DFI boards. Could be running 2T is enough to get it working stable albeit slightly slower than you could if you were lucky enough to get stable settings at 1T (hard to do as I've tried and failed a few times).
