A friend has the motherboard mentioned and 16Gb Corsair VENGEANCE LPX 3200

Before bios update he found he could not turn on XMP without the machine not posting to bios.

Then after update to bios all working fine at 2100, then tried XMP again and machine would not post again. Even after Bios reset it will not post ?

Any idea ?

Should he replace the motherboard with a new one he has just purchased this or memory.

First of all make sure the ram is in the correct slots, ive known plenty of boards to play up if he's accidently using the secondary slots, refer to the instruction manual as to which slots he should be using, usually the primary slots are 2 and 4, secondary are 1 (closest to the CPU) and 3.

next, try and manually set the speed and main timings, try 2933mhz on the RAM first before attempting to jump to 3200mhz, RAM voltage set to 1.35v and im not sure what its called in the ASUS bios, they have a tendency to chage the names of things, but set the NB / SOC voltage to 1.100v

Looking at the Asus pdf for the Prime x470 pro supported memory and you might be out of luck? Can't see a 3200 Corsair Vengeance listed.

the only 3200 I can see are:

G.SKILL F4-3200C16D-16GFX
G.SKILL F4-3200C16D-16GFXR
G.SKILL F4-3200C16D-16GTZR
G.SKILL F4-3200C14D-16GTZR
Hyper X HX432C18FBK2/16
Hyper X HX432C18FBK2/32
TEAMGROUP TF1D416G3200HC16CDC01
TEAMGROUP TF2D416G3200HC16CDC01
V-COLOR TL48G32S8CRGB16
KINGMAX GZOG43F-18SIGP
ZADAK ZD4-SHA3200C16-08GAS

Saying that, I'm sure other ram cards will work at 3200... (having the same fun trying to spec ram for a strix x470 build and noticing that even the "trusted" 8 pack ram isn't on the list, so not 100% sure whether to go for that or not...)

It was in correct slots, he cannot even get to the bios now to change it. Tried to reset bios with switch, also tried to flash bios using drives but this achieves nothing also. He is RMAing the board but now nervous of changing the memory settings, although i am pretty sure it could cause performance issues leaving it at 2100mzh

I feel a bit responsible as I told him my understanding the 2700x didnt have the issues with memory that 1700x did and he should be fine when he ordered it.

I think most ram works - but not necessarily at their advertised/designed speeds... newer bios's help with compatibility, but select ram from the motherboard's approved list, or at least try to choose Samsung b-die ram (https://benzhaomin.github.io/bdiefinder/ to give you a good chance... (No doubt I'll be now told this is wrong, but that's my understanding)

Haven't you got some ram to put into his motherboard to at least get into bios?

as a thought - I'm more used to Gigabyte motherboards, so might be unique to them, but does it have a dual/backup bios? Can you swap into the other and try that?

If he has windows 10 installed, you can get the the bios via the update and security settings page, you'll have to wait until I get home in about an hour for instructions on how to do this.......sounds to me like he's enabled ultra fast boot which isn't giving him time to get in, once you get in, disable that option if it's enabled.

Goto settings - update and security - recovery - advanced startup…...restart now button, the PC will restart and he'll be in windows 10 recovery options with a blue screen, select Troubleshoot - Advanced - UEFI Firmware Settings - Restart button...…the PC will reboot straight into the bios to make adjustments.

I am running a 2700X on an Asus x470 Prime with the Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200mhz. I placed the ram memory modules in A1/B1 the black memory banks and it didn't boot on DOCP (XMP) mode, restarted 3 times and then went into safe mode.
Then i placed the ram modules in the grey A2/B2 banks and it booted with DOCP (XMP) @3200MHZ.
Did a Memtest86 with no errors after 4 hours and its running very stable at the moment.
Note the Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200MHZ C16 is not QVL Certified and known that it can have issues, it uses samsung e-die memory and samsung b-die is preferred using Ryzen
