Problems with gigabyte Z77-D3H

Hi Folks,
Well my bits and bobs for my budget upgrade arrived and over the weekend i did some computer building.

unfortunately i ran into issues with the motherboard. on boot it turns itself off and on sporadically for up to a minute or so until it finally boots up.

The first time i managed to get it to boot it informed me that the bios was corrupted and was rebuilding the bios. Once this completed all seemed ok...

until i tried installing an os. I have windows 7 prof and also a copy of the developer edition windows 8. both of the installs appear to go ok until its starts copying files onto the disk. after a while i get an error about files being corrupted and from then on I cannot see the disk during an install.. bios sees it but os install doesn't.

in the end i had to clean the disk using diskpart.exe. tried again and the same thing happens.

ive tried different sata settings in bios, swapped cables and sata ports. no joy.

ive unplugged everything and reseated the motherboard and all the connectors. no joy there either.

ive tried to install ubuntu on it but the install disk wont even get to the end of loading the os

I believe the motherboard is faulty - what are the thoughts of the forum?

other parts.

no name case

Intel Core i3-3220 3.30GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail
Gigabyte Z77-D3H Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard
Western Digital Caviar Blue 1TB SATA 6Gbs 64MB Cache WD10EZEX - OEM ** Single Platter **
OCZ CoreXtreme 500w '80 Plus' Power Supply
PNG 4G DDR3 memory

im using a bog standard advent keyboard and logitech mouse.
im building the os from a usb liteon external dvd drive

i have tried another drive and i still get the strange on/off boot behaviour.
i cant install onto my other drive though cause it holds some data

first thing above all others is to flash to the latest bios using qflash and a usb stick,do that first and then type in 100 bclk, set cpu voltage response to fast

and at gigabyte splash screen press alt and f10 repeatedly (fast) to flash back up with the main bios version so that bothe bios chips are running the same bios version

all of that will help resolve boot loops and stability

ok. i dont thinks its memory because it was all night doing a disk clean and the system stayed stable also, the memory reports fine in the bios. I will run a memtest later though - although i dont have a spare memory to swap out if it is a problem with memory.

wazza im going to do the bios update. can you explain where I type in 100 bclk?

Ok then.

i flashed the bios and did the alt F10 to copy the new bios to the backup.

im still getting the looping through startup for about a minute before the pc starts to boot.

I just tried installing windows 7 pro again twice and its blue screened at the expanding file system bit.

The looping you describe obviously shouldn't be happening. You need to get it fixed before it's even worth attempting to install Windows.

Do you have both power plugs connected to the motherboard?
Have you tried with the memory one stick at a time, and in different slots?
Have you got a speaker connected so you can hear any bios beep codes?
Any chance at all the cpu cooler could be badly mounted?

yes both plugs are securely in the motherboard

yes I only have one memory stick at the moment and ive tried it in all slots

the speaker is connected and once the pc decides to boot there is a single beep.

The cpu cooler is firmly mounted and the cpu shows a steady temp of around 37*

im running out of options because i don't really have any spare kit to swap out and test with.

its in the m.i.t section

manually type in 100,set the vcore voltage response to fast aswell

The only setting you should need to touch to run a machine at stock is the memory voltage, and even then it shouldn't be necessary.

What voltage is the memory rated to run at?

heres f19b beta for the z77 d3h,its well known to manually set 100 blck to help with boot loops and alt f10 to have both bios chips running the same bios version, even at stock settings, you might have to tweak a few things to be stable imo

you can always flash back to previous bios if it doesnt fix things, for me using the z77x up4 th,flashing to the latest beta bios was essential as it fixed a lot of niggles, memory being one of them

Thanks Wazza trying that now.
docs for memory is upstairs and i dont want to wake the missus up lol.
i see if i can post memory info tomorrow

interesting...

its got further than before on windows 7 build

holy crap its completed the windows 7 build...

however, when it reboots it says that ive got a boot failure due to an incorrect config - do i want to load the bios defaults

im running the bios you posted earlier.

seems to run ok but on reboot wants to go back to configuration defaults.

im reinstalling windows again because i got another blue screen.

whats the best memory to get for this motherboard that wont cause these issues cause im beginning to think its the memory now.

try with just one memory stick installed, and set dram voltage to 1.55v in the bios

im using samsung green memory, what memory you using? if its on gigabytes qvl list then it should work fine

and if it supports x.m.p then set to that in the bios,it will set it up for you
