All Windows based PCs and laptops can access this wireless network fine but when I try with my Macbook, running Leopard, I just get connection timed out. I've tried connecting using Windows XP running on my Macbook and this connected in a few seconds with no problems at all.

Is there an issue with Belkin products and Mac products running Leopard at all?

Have you checked if:
a) the machine is connecting to the wireless (ie check it's client tables - if belkin has them)
b) do 'ifconfig' on the terminal prompt to see if you have an IP address on the wireless network. If not then it looks like the DHCP is causing a problem - check that there's no security preventing the DHCP server assigning an IP address (ie MAC address locking).

If the MacBook connects using XP under Boot Camp, it is CLEARLY a Leopard problem.

What version of Leopard are you running? I ask because i'm currently connecting to a Belkin access point, and when I updated to 10.5.4 yesterday using Software Update it wouldn't connect. Kept asking me for my WPA password, which was correct, and then failing to connect. Downloading the combo update fixed wireless (and the other thing it broke).

My suggestion is to download the 10.5.4 Combo Update here and install it :)

What encryption are you using?

Will it connect without encryption?

Have you tried putting "$" (no quotes) infront of the network SSID (on the MacBook)?

What colour is the traffic light in the network pane of system preferences?

Have you tried assigning manual details (subnet, gateway, IP etc)?

It's using WEP encryption (I think), I don't want to remove the encryption as it's not my network!
Have tried putting $ in front of the password but this fails still, and I havent tried assigning manual details either.

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but this is still causing problems. I can't understand why it won't connect when the password (WPA I discovered) is definitely correct. It just says connectin failed.

attention all mac users: issues connecting to belkin access points are caused by the type of encryption your router is using.

For best results you should use only WPA/2 on AES.

WPA TKIP and WEP do not seem to hold connections very well, if at all.

I had this yesterday, with a brand new Macbook.

I have fixed the problem 100% (touch wood) by logging in to my wireless router and picking a different channel for the WiFi. By default it was using channel 11, so I switched it to channel 1 and my Macbook connected immediately.

From what I can gather, the connection problems and timeouts are due to interference on the WiFi band (from other devices, DECT phones, neighbours networks etc.), so picking a different channel for the router could work for you.

My XP laptop and Macmini were both ok with the router on channel 11 though . . . .

All 3 are ok on channel 1.

Small update -

Just changed the wireless encryption to WPA Personal and I'm now posting via OSX on the network :)
Cheers for the suggestions!

I was just about to say (well, before I got to the bottom :p ) that WEP in my very limited dealings with it is an absolute pain in both Windows & OS X. Not that I would ever use it myself - i'm one of these insane people who will ONLY use WPA2 and even then still have a 63 character passkey

Glad you got it working!
