Hi there,

I have atm a Nvidia Geforce4 6800GT Pci-Express Graphics card, the other day i notices some serious issues with the grpahics in game (World of Warcraft) speckles all over the screen and then Triangle Blocks Distorting my view.

As you can see its pretty messed up.

So, i restared my computer, and this is when i noticed some SERIOUS problems, the boots up screen, all the white text some letters was distorted and ther was dashed lines ALL down the scree - - - - - - - - - like that, this was on all parts of the 'dos like' boot up. When it come to the Windows loading scree which is suppose to be black, the bottom half of the screen was all distorted with blue patches all over it.

I thought something was real wrong, as when i finally got onto windows, it was as if my Graphics card had not even loaded, as everything was REAL REAL slow even moving windows and scrolling down on internet pages. I went onto the Nvidia website and Downloaded the latest Drivers, i went throught the install procedure but they dont seem to want to load, it just comes up with 'no modifications have been done to your pc, try again later' type message. However Window recognises that the hardware is there as it comes up with the 'found new hardware' box, i go through that procedure and chose that the software is on a cd, and enter my original Driver CD that i got with the card, when it gets to the installing part it just Blue Screens on me and Restarts my computer.

After a complete Format and Re install of windows it still does the same(blue screen and wont install drivers etc etc).

Sorry for the long post but wanted to make sure i wrote everything. Is my Grpahics Card Screwed? or is it windows?

Thanks

Carl

The fact that you are getting corruption on your POST screens is not a good sign.

Tried the card in a different PC or a different card in your PC?

I'd try the card in another PC, but I think it will still happen.

Heat isn't the problem because if it's happening on POST then the damage had been done a long time ago and it's borked now, purely and simply.

Probably not what you wanted to hear, but on the off chance it's still under warranty you should send it back A.S.A.P.

If you are getting corruption on boot either the card is borked or your monitor is on its last legs.

I would be inclined to say that its the GPU thats the problem.

Cant try the card in another Pc unfortunately, as knowone i know has Pci express, ok so buying another card is what i have to do, So any reccomendations on a card? i got about £300 to spend and i use my PC ONLY for gaming so im looking for a card that will run most if not all games on high setting, basically top of the range within my limit.

My Comp specs are

AMD64 3500+ Processor
2gig Giel Value Ram (3200 speed i think)
Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe Motherboard

thanks for all your replies this is really appreciated.

Hiya Carl - if you have such a a healthy budget then i suggest you get the Ati Radeon HIS X1900XT 512 - you will be able to play EVERYTHING on MAX with that - i just upgraded to one from a 7800Gt Extreme and the difference is outstanding - a stonking card for £250ish.

This is a Pci Express Card? is it on the OC website, as i live 10mins from the waerhouse(cant spell :P ) so its handy to get it from OC.

Yes it is, and its a cracking card, id definately go for the 512mb x1900 XT. :)

Just make sure your PSU is powerfull enough to run it, as they are very power hungry.

depending on what resolution you want to run at, a Geforce (if you want to stay with Nvidia) 7900 GTO is at the sweet point of price performance on OCuk at the moment. Quiet, fast, and overclockable (although given your experience I can understand if you want to steer clear of overclocking).

The ATi alternative would be a X1900XT. Please don't ask which is better [CAN->Worms], and they should both give you change from £200, let alone £300.

Yeah it'll run on your board fine, id get this one HIS ATI Radeon X1900 XT ICEQ 3 SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 AVIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-053-HT) 8th one down, very quiet as well, as i said above just make sure yer Power-Supply is up to the job of powering it, as they sup some juice. :)

I dunno if everyone just said get the 256mb x1900 XT for £150, then everyone would say WTF why not tell him to get the 512mb version if hes got £300 to spend, you can't win. :(
