Hey all I really hope someone can help me with a maor problem that has cropped up with my vista ultimate rig in the past 3 weeks, it seems the display has randomly started freezing. It can happen when I'm downloading a file or playing an audio/video file in media player or typing this forum thread (3 times in a row so I'm know typing it on my other computer!) or browsing the web, even if the computer is idle with no apps running it can still happen.

UPDATE: When the display freezes the audio/video file will keep playing and any downloads will continue so it doesn't seem as if the whole pc is locking up.

I have tried uninstalling all non essential applications such as itunes, quictime, divx, torrent client, acrobat etc etc but it makes no difference. I have run a thorough virus scan with avast and found nothing and have scanned for spyware also turned up nothing. I have also tried reinstalling my graphics card drivers but that had no effect. Have also uninstalled my MX revolution mouse and tried a ps2 one as well as a ps2 keyboard again with no effect. I thought before I go to the trouble of reformatting the system drive and reinstalling from scratch I'd ask the wise community for their thoughts

I have listed my hardware and driver versions below I hope someone can help please.

Windows vista ultimate 64bit oem installed from fresh on new system (not an upgrade) system built and installed end of feb '07

Core2 6700 cpu
EVGA 680 SLI MAINBOARD v 15.00 drivers
BFG 8800 GTS v 158.24 drivers
2GB corsair pc2 6400c4
Enermax galaxy 850w PSU
Logitech MX revolution mouse v 4.00 setpoint drivers
Enermax alluminium USB keyboard

Many thanks

Adrian

My system occasionally oauses liek that, most of the time it comes back to ife after a minute or two, but sometimes it doesn't. I've read of other people experiencing the same, but have yest to see an explanation or solution.

I had a similar thing, reinstalled and it fixed everything, I have a similar set-up. I suspect it's the Nvidia driver not updating itself / uninstalling the old driver properly

I am having this problem on two computers at the moment.

A socket 775 and a top spec I7 setup it always does it when i manually load up windows update and check for updates otherwise it is just random.

I dont know what to suggest it is driving me mental i have tried to find some literature on the internet but there is nothing that i can see and no fixes what so ever.

Although it seems a lot of people are having the problem.

I have tried it with no graphics drivers on my computer and with graphics drivers, i even RMA'd the MOBO, RAM & CPU for the I7 setup and no luck.

I just cant believe this is happening on two independant machines it must be a microsoft issue.

I've had this for a while on a MacBook/Vista Ultimate and assumed it was a shoddy driver that came with Bootcamp. If I could be bothered I'd reformat but I've got used to it.

A format has not helped me at all the same problem persists.

Im so so angry as i built this for my parents and the most important thing for them is stability and reliability.
