Problems with new build, blinking underscore on boot only

Hi

I have just put together the following pc

4790k cpu
Gigabyte z87-ud7-th
2x8gb hyperx ddr3
480gb corsair mx100 ssd
Dvd writer

When turning it on all I get is a blinking underscore on the top left of the screen. There is no bios post / splash screen. The code on the motherboard reads as A9 - bios is initialised.

After doing some reading I found that perhaps the mobo does not support the cpu and I would need to flash it to the latest firmware. I looked on the Gigabyte website and it said a G1820 CPU is supported from the initial release so I bought one of those only to find it does exactly the same thing.

I have tried with single sticks of memory and nothing.

This is driving me nuts so any help is appreciated.

Have tried the following now:

Clear cmos
Bios switch
Unplug everything except 1 stick of ram
Holding down delete / f2 when booting

Still nothing. Is it most likely the motherboard is at fault?

Although I don't think that can be it as the G1820 is listed as compatible with the earliest Bios and that exhibits the exact same behaviour, what a waste of £30 that was.
