Hi all,
I put together a new rig on Saturday with the specs in my sig. I installed Windows 7 and it found almost all the drivers (had a few issues with the onboard LAN even without the supposedly dodgy one from Windows Update for this motherboard, but ultimately resolved them). Runs games brilliantly and very pleased except for a few complaints:
-The power supply whines during 3D applications. It also did this on and off whilst loading Windows and scrolling a window up and down. Turning off C1E and EIST in the BIOS as recommended on the Corsair forums fixed this, but oddly Team Fortress 2 plays with no noises (EDIT: it makes a low buzzing noise compared to Crysis) and Crysis makes the power supply whine really loudly (it is not the fan and it is without a doubt from inside the power supply). I have it on RMA so will return it tomorrow, but I read a lot of Corsair power supplies do this. Anyone else had this problem?
-The hard disk is VERY loud. You can hear it clicking and it makes a lot of noise. I used to use a WD Caviar 250GB which was totally silent in my old computer (in a ThermalTake Armor Jr). The Thermaltake case had rubber grommets and a hard drive caddy thing, whereas the Antec is a bit more spartan and does not have these. Am I right to assume this is why the 500GB Black is a lot louder? Not really keen on swapping hard drives about. I am planning to buy an SSD when prices drop and using the 500GB as storage, but if it stays this loud it'll drive me mad...
-I'm after some software to control my fan speeds. Can software do this or will I need to purchase a hardware fan controller? I have my Fenrir plugged directly into my motherboard, and it is only going at 1000RPM. I am using two Scythe S-FLEX fans as intake fans. Both of these fans are very loud when plugged into a normal 4 pin molex so I used two Zalman fan controllers I had lying around and they are now plugged into them, then into my motherboard (SYS FAN 1 and 3; 2 is a 4 pin header on my motherboard). Can anyone recommend a fan controller?
My case is absolutely silent when idle (it actually surprised me once I got all the fans on low and turned my old PC off, I thought nothing was on...save for the hard drive and whining PSU as described above) but I would like to have the ability to easily change the speeds in case it gets too hot.
-A final problem that isn't all important but odd nonetheless: the front HDD and power LEDs do not work. They are plugged into the motherboard correctly (I followed the manual exactly and both the power and reset switches work). Has anyone else had trouble connecting an Antec 300 to an EX58-UD3R?
I realise now I may have rambled on a bit. However, when you're putting together a new system you've shelled a lot of money out for, you want to get everything working perfectly!
