Hi guys, i'm hoping you can help me with some problems i'm having with a new build.

So today I built my first ever PC, got everything wired up, all seemed to go ok until I turned it on and here's where the problems started.

There's a a high pitched whining noise coming from somewhere, at first I thought it was the PSU but I can't be 100% sure. I've disconnected the dvd drive and harddrive, also disconnected the graphics card too so I dunno. Also, on startup the cpu hsf is making a whirring noise that gradually gets louder and louder to the point were it was unbearable so I had to turn the PC off. Maybe these would be simple fixes but for a first timer they don't seem so easy.

I'm now thinking I'm out of my depth building my own PC as I was expecting everything to go swimmingly!

build list is as follows if needed:
Fractal R3 Case
Antec True Power 650w Modular
Asus M4A79XTD EVO
Sapphire Radeon 5770
Phenom X4 955 (stock cooler/hsf)
1TB WD Caviar Black
XMS3 Corsair RAM 4GB

Go easy on me as i'm a computer nub :P. I've not even got past the bios screen lol but it is nearly 3am and things not going to plan have disheartened me slightly. So any help is appreciated, thanks.

Thanks for the welcomes and quick replies everyone. All cables were plugged in fine (well as far as I could tell). So this morning, I opened it up and started taking things out. The high pitch noise is still there and now I'm pretty sure it's the psu :/. Also, the fan on the psu isn't spinning so perhaps the two problems are connected. Looks like i'm going to have to send it back. I haven't got another psu to test the motherboard (typing on a laptop) but now i'm pretty sure it is the PSU.

I still have the problem with the heatsink fan, as soon as I switch it on it revs up louder and louder within the space of a few seconds. I took it off and tried reaseating it but to no avail.

They are all new components and I didn't account for anything going wrong as I wrongly thought everything would just go smoothly :p

Anyway, just thought i'd keep you updated.
Thanks.

True, thanks Admiral. I've raised an RMA now so hopefully it will be sorted and returned working! I might still need to post here regarding the heatsink fan though, but one thing at a time eh :)
