Hi all

I have put together my first computer with following specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5 2500k
MOBO: Asus P8P67 Pro B3 rev. 3.1
RAM: Corsair 8GB DDR3 VENGEANCE LP PC3-12800 1600MHZ CL9 (2X4GB)
GPU: Asus GTX580 DirectCU II
SSD: Crucial M4 128 GB SSD (For Windows and other programs)
HDD: SEAGATE BARRACUDA GREEN 2TB 5900RPM SATA/600 64MB (For storage)
CASE: FRACTAL DESIGN DEFINE R3 BLACK
PSU: CORSAIR AX 750W
DVD: SAMSUNG DVD±R/RW/RAM DL 22X SATA
CPU-FAN: NOCTUA NH-U12P SE2
FANS: NOCTUA NF-P12 (3 of those)
Monitor: DELL U2311H

I then installed Windows 7 Pro, all drivers and updated windows. I hadn't overclocked anything yet, except I changed the RAM to 1600 MHz instead of the default 1333 MHz. I ran Prime95 for 10 min or so, just to see temps (about 55°C at 100% load) and then wanted to see how the GPU was doing. I installed the free version of 3D Mark 11 but when I run benchmark, either it stopped because the nvidia drivers has stopped on the Physics Test or on test 2 a black screen comes that stays until I stopped the program. When the nvidia drivers stopped, they continued to always stop and wouldn't be fixed proberly until I restared the computer.

I tried installing new drives from Nvidia through windows update (version 275) and same thing happened, so I tried the newest drivers (version 280) and same thing happens. I went out for few ours and had the computer turned off. When I come back home and turn it on, it just gave me blue screen when starting windows. I tried repairing windows, which didn't work, then restored from an older checkpoint. After that I just got a grey screen so I reinstalled windows. Everything worked fine, I installed drivers from the MOBO cd, restarted computer, installed driver from the GPU cd, restarted computer and now windows doesn't start, I just get black screen instead and the GPU fans goes to 100% for 2-3 secs. Kind of stuck now.

My first thought was GPU was the problem, now I think it is the SSD or both. Gonna try the following:
-Try installing Win7 on the HDD (Don't have an extra GPU to verify if that is the problem)

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help in advance

Little update

Tried installing Windows on another HDD. Completed setup, installed drivers from MOBO cd, restarted computer, installed drivers from GPU cd, restarted computer, get grey screen instead of windows login.

I rolled back gpu drivers in windows safe mode and was then able to login in normal mode. So if I install drivers for the gpu and restart the computer, I get either BSOD or a grey screen instead of login screen. Tried this with drivers that came with the GPU, version 280, version 275 and version 270.

Any ideas?

Yeah, installed all motherboard drivers from the CD that came with it. And I connected power marked PCI-E from the psu to the gpu and put it into the top pci-e slot on the board, that should be 16x. But did also try the middle one that should be 8x. Didn't bother with the lowest one that should be 1x or 4x.

Don't want to RMA the GPU unless I'm sure, since if there is no fault with it, the shop I bought it from charge 500 DKK per hour (about £60) for testing :(

Just tried another gpu from a friend, amd 5850, and now everything works fine, so I'm gonna RMA the gtx 580.

Thanks everyone for the help! :)

just to be certain you can always check your card in his rig to see weither its actually your card.

Not sure how the 5850 compares against the gtx 580 in terms of power consumption.

Still guessing its PSU related, i just have a feeling :)

Hehe, I hope that feeling is wrong, otherwise it's gonna cost me bunch of money :P
