Just received my MSI 7870 Hawk. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-162-MS&campaign=pcm/googleshopping

  • Installed it just like my 4890.
  • Booted fine.
  • Installed drivers, restarted.
  • Played Deus Ex for about 5 minutes.
  • System unexpectedly just turned off, no noise or bangs, just off.
  • No response from trying to boot PC.
  • Checked cables, re seated card.
  • GPU fans kick, but not response from any part of system.
  • Removed battery from motherboard.
  • Still wouldn't boot.
  • Reinstalled 4890 and works fine.

Motherboard will boot with my 4890. Will try to boot once more with the 7870 but I suspect I've been given a dud card. The cover on the heatsink of the HAWK seems slightly bent, as in it dips down instead of being level with the PCI bracket, could just be how they are all made but haven't seen another in the flesh, was first thing I noticed when I opened the box. Except for my haribo...thanks for that. :)

Any ideas? I have a 600W Be Quiet power supply, this seems very odd! Seems to be the card causing the problems.

System spec:

  • [email protected] on Noctua D-14 43 idle 55 load
  • Gigabyte P35C-DS3R latest firmware etc
  • 4GB DDR3
  • Spinpoint F3 1TB
  • SB Audigy2 ZS

Frustrating... anyone think this card had lifespan of about 10 minutes? Really want to send back for RMA today if possible.

I called up OCUK and they agreed to send out a replacement after I RMA it. Took 1:45 on phone not bad service lol.

Why would removing the gpu reactor work? I can try removing the reactor but I shouldn't have to, it's not required for installation and it booted up without me fiddling with anything the first time.

edit: **** me that is hard to get off, hurts my fingers loool.

I was wondering if you had removed it incase you'd reattached it wrong, but nvm.

I can't work out how to get mine off. The only information in the manual just shows a hand pulling it straight off. But after pulling slightly hard I decided that was too much force and gave up, lol.

Basically you have to push the sides to the front and back of the card together to release the clips, it is bloody hard work mind. I got mine off, but it was seated correctly anyway I assume because the blue light came on haha.

So... the postage for RMA cost me £9.75 for an item that didn't last me 2 seconds.

Not complaining, I know it's not OCUK's fault in any way. Just wondering if anyone has had anything back from their postage costs? Perhaps some form of discount or a cheque from manufacturer?

I hope i get more luck with my R7870 then i did with my R6870 but no refund on postage and i sent mine back twice with DHL 15.99 each time cause royal mail is useless.

Damn. I'm trying to decide if I should ask to upgrade my order to the VTX3D HD 7970 for £299 or the VTX3D HD 7950 for £240, same price as this MSI...the MSI was a nice looking card but it failed so I'm really confused haha.

I know, you are right. Just for the price I can get a 7970 for £60 more, which is rougly 48% faster? Might as well...calling them now. The MSI is a nice card, bit gimmicky, but really cool.

the VTX 7970 for that price is a total bargain. Plenty of folk here have them. Ask about or search the graphics forum for old threads. Gets a lot of love from people who bought them, I cant remember reading anything bad about them. But if im wrong someone will point it out as OCuk forum bashing is a hobby of some here :p

So glad to hear that as just ordered now! Will get a refund for my postage back and for the price of the 7870. Excellent service!

New VTX 7970 on thursday, what a bargain haha. Will have a look at the other threads, I was impressed by the components on the MSI (they were gold plated and everything was cooled) but not bothered, for the price the VTX 7970 appears to have a great cooler and nothing wrong with the reference design anyway.

Will have a good look through forums, thank you.

Thanks for the advice, I will use it. :) 7970 on a Q6600, never thought I'd see that happen, but price is too good to pass up and it will be an improvement anyway. Next upgrade CPU and Mobo that won't bottleneck!

Wish i seen 7950 first bahh just got a refund on my last card will stick with the hawk for now fingers crossed but OC sorted all for me this morning many thanks again guys.

The Hawk was running Deus Ex like a movie on FULL settings. Card felt solid with very high quality components, should last you a very long time if you don't get a dud. Card was silent compared to rest of my system also, apart from start up when it seems to clean itself. The Reactor was so cool haha, and I love backplates on things. You won't be dissapointed. :)

Did you see what Space Monkey wrote above about postage costs by the way? @Spirer
