Right after the problems I had with the msi oc ultra which I returned rma, have been looking through this and other forums and it seem the problems I had i.e. crashing with the error display driver stopped responding shown on screen on most games is very common across the range of NVIDIA 8800 cards not just ultras but also non over clocked gtx’s.. Nobody seems to have a fix for this either… I’m starting to wonder if I should go back to an ati card 2900xt as the problem doesn’t seem to afflict them and my old 1950xtx was never a problem.
Wonder what you all think about this….

Well my first suspicion would be your CPU at 3.5ghz possibly causing the problem, the reason your X1950 may not have been as bad was likely because it didn't draw as much power as the 8800, but if it still happens with your CPU/memory at stock then maybe it's worth trying a 2900xt.

Hi,, No its not a psu problem and i dont think it was a cooling problem, card was running between 60-80c, which is about right for these card's had a 120mm fan blowing across the card as well...
No i think the problem was either hardware (ie card) or software..
Big shame it was a really nice card,, ATi owners are not reporting major problems with their card's, execpt there not as powerfull, dont know what to do

with 1200w psu in his sig power issues should be no problems at all.

True, but then there's a lot more strain on the motherboard circuitry.

Also, just because the display driver crashes doesn't necessarily mean the graphics card/driver is at fault.

Have you tried with your CPU/memory at stock mrh2019?

Have not tried running the cpu at stock speed, really don't think it is and cpu problem.. have overclocked cpu's big time using phase in the past with 2x6800 ultras running never had this sort of problem!! the memory is not overclocked... the really strange thing about this is that the card never crashed while playing stalker or benching using 3d06 but would crash within 30-45 mins playing company of hereos and sooner playing half life 2, anyway dont have the card anymore..

Does sound like your overclock was affecting it if your games crashed at random times, HL2 was notorious for not liking overclocks so probably the reason why that was crashing out sooner than say Stalker.

Never had any problems at all with my GTS apart from the Nv4 BSOD, but thats a well known driver error, and it only happened in the 9x.xx drivers for me, all the 1xx.xx drivers are Nv4 BSOD free for me and working great. :)

2900 XT is a good card, its faster than the GTS, only downsides are it uses more power, gives out moer heat and is louder, but if that doesn't bother you then go for it, cracking card.
