Problems with router supplied by 02 Broadband

I have an issue with my LAN at home. I have an adsl connection supplied by 02 and I'm using the boggo standard Wireless ADSL router that came with the package (Thompson I believe - I can get the model number when I get home)

I have 1 desktop PC connected via an ethernet cable, 2 laptop's that are connected wirelessly and a Blackberry, also connects wirelessly.

The problem I'm having is the router works fine when the desktop is turned off, but as soon as the PC boots up and obtains an I.P address, the wireless network goes down. (But the PC does keep a connection and can connect to the internet) When I look in the admin panel, the router tells me the WLAN is active.

Any idea's folks? It's worked for about 3 months, I haven't changed anything recently!

Going to hard reset the router tonight I think, it's majorly annoying as the desktop PC has all my network shares etc

Thanks in advance!

Chuck it in the bin and buy an ex sky Netgear dg834gt router for a tenner. Put the newest netgear firmware on and enjoy trouble free internet. The thomson box is a pile of crap. I found that out with my own experience

i had issues with the 02 router when i got setup, kept disconnecting me from onlines games after 10 secs or so, its rubbish at the end of the day, get a netgear and dont look back

Kinda tempted by getting the DG834GT. Currently my max sync is around 5.5mb with the standard O2 Wireless Box II, do you guys think ill be able to squeeze maybe 6mb out of it if i get the Netgear?

Sorry for the hijack btw! Interested in this myself :p

Alternatively if your feeling fruity, get a WRT54GL and bung Tomato on it, bung the O2 box in bridge mode and dont look back ;)

im with be, used the o2/be router and i got 16.5 meg max (26 snr). Netgear DG834N = 19.5 Meg. However at my older address , i had a high snr (58.5), and both units connected at similar speeds. Netgear is better end of story.

Which is most likely to be reliable:

O2 router (bridge mode) + WRT54GL
or
DG834GT

Go AM200+WRT54GL instead.

Slightly better than the DG834GT but more money. It's a toss-up.

Going via this route just means more expense, at least you already have the O2 box, just needs to be switched into bridge mode for the WRT54GL to do all the work. Reliability wise as the O2 box isnt doing any routing it should be on par with the AM200 reliability wise.

My BEBox is sat in bridge mode to a WRT54GL and sits there happily without requiring a reboot for months if at all.

The o2 box will not be quite as good at holding noisy lines and often will sync slightly lower on a(ny) line than an AM200 or DG834GT.

I've supported a *lot* of people on o2/Be and there is a definite improvement in moving from the Speedtouches to the alternatives mentioned.

Now, weather or not that improvement justifies the cost is another matter... And in the case of the AM200+WRT54GL route I tend to agree, it's not. The DG834GT is worth it though. Mostly because you can pick them up for about ~£10 if you shop around on an auction site for an ex-Sky one.

Aekron, i know you have servers on L4D and stuff and i got a quick question for you. When i put the DG Team firmware on my ex sky dg834gt, i kept getting disconnections from TF2 and L4D even if the SNR and all the settings were at default. When i put the standard firmware back on it was fine. Do you know if this issue was resolved?

As far as the standard O2 Thomson 585v7 wireless box goes, i never had any trouble with that with L4D. I could play L4D for hours without any problems. The wireless signal is also stronger than my GT. Only reason i got rid was because it struggled to handle 6 computers all on at the same time and would lock up. My GT handles them all just fine and i get a higher sync speed if i tweak the target SNR.

My 834GT locks up every few days, I have to power cycle it, very annoying and a shame as it gets good speed. I might just use the O2 box again as I didnt have any problems with that.

Strange, that's pretty much the opposite experience to most people. The Speedtouches often have problems in games but the GTs don't. I know there was one release of the DGTeam firmware a few months back that had 'issues', but that's been sorted now afaik. My own GT/DGTeam setup has been rock solid for months now. I'm actually scared to upgrade the firmware in case it's not as good :)

I used to have this issue on an old GT (We're talking about 3 years ago though) - I'm not sure if it was just very old firmware or a duff router. The 5 or 6 I've used since then haven't had the issue.

I bought a DGN2000 yesterday to replace my O2 II box.

I have loaded DGteam firmware on it and it disconnects every now and then also. I have since loaded the netgear firmware back on it and it does the same thing.

It sometimes just disconnects and i can't even contact the router through 192.168.0.1. But if i leave it for a couple minutes it comes back to life.

Very odd...

The o2 box while very rubbish never dropped it's connection.

Smells like a faulty router to me or only partially compatible with O2's network, you could ask on the O2 forums and see if anyone can help or return it as faulty.

O2 Box in bridge mode and a WRT54GL w/tomato would have been perfectly stable and cheaper :/
