Problems with the heat?

In the last few days i've had a few problems with heat in my system.. It has been up to around 30C in my room lately and I've had random crashes. At the weekend it didn't seem too bad and I could generally reboot and it would be sorted out, however now i can only start my computer in safe mode, because whenever i put any strain on it (especially with graphics) it falls over.

I have had cooling problems in the past and never got around to rectifying it, last summer i had to start opening the side of the case to get some air in and the fans at the front and rear were temperamental (i don't know if anyone else has had that problem with the 4 pin papst fans from ocuk?) but i never had crashes this bad. The thing is, the CPU temp seems ok (was reading 40C immediately after i just restarted from a crash) and the mobo temp is 31C, the gfx card was at 55C but that seems to be ok and from the way things are going I presumed it was a problem with the gfx card?

Any ideas what the problem could be? I've got an athlonx 2800+ XP and a 6800GT leadtek graphics card (with the massive copper cooler).. the cpu cooler is one of the older copper thermalright ones.

your temps seem fine mate, i dont think they are causing your crashes, though it seems weird they should strike during the summer. last time you had the crashing issue was it in the summer months?? - maybe someone else has got some ideas about this one

Does opening the case as you've done in the past make any difference this time?

Also, check your GPU temp with the nvidia control panel.

Sounds odd, but I think ASUS Pc probe is causing the issue, I'll confirm tomorrow whhen i get the chance but every time i started up and i checked it for temps it seemed to crash, that doesn't make a lot of sense i know but i've had problems with it before on other machines!

GPU temp in nvidia control panel is fine

Uninstalled the drivers, rebooted, everything ok, re-installed and half way through the installation it dies.

Any idea what could have happened??? I can't believe it overheated, surely there is protection over that?
