After hours on Google yeilding no results I thought I would post my problems here, any help is greatly appreciated.

I got a Viewsonic VX2235WM last year, but I haven't tried any games on it yet untill now. I think my problems with Unreal Tournament99 is linked to the monitor as it used to work perfectly on my old CRT but I am at a loss about the rest.

When I load UT99 it starts in windowed mode (at 640 x 480) and when I press Alt+Enter to maximise it, the screen flashes back and it goes back to the windowed game. The only way I can get it to fill the screen is to resize the windowed box. A minor problem I suppose, but a problem nonetheless

I recently got Half Life 2 (classic) and when I try to load it (via Steam), the client says "Preparing to load Half Life 2", then the screen will go black and then it'll go back to my desktop. It does this with or without the DVD in the drive. The status of the game is 100%. This seems a common problem but there has been no conclusive solutions from what I've found.

I also installed Colin Mcrae Rally 3, as with the others, it installed fine, but when I try to run it, the screen goes black and then I get the old XP error message of "Rally_3PC.exe has encountered an error..."

These are the only three games I've tried on my computer (specs in my sig) in a very long time, and none of them functioning properly if at all, I am not sure if they are related or not.

My actions so far have been:
- Install older ATI drivers (7.10) and reinstall my current drivers (7.12)
- Reinstall the games
- Check my monitor drivers
- run the DirectX webupdate from the Microsoft site
- Trying various launch options littered on forums I found via google
- Patching the games to their latest versions

None of these improve or change the situation what so ever.

Any ideas?

Thank you for your time

An update.

When I launch Farcry, the screen goes black and then goes back to the desktop, and when I try Dungeon Seige, I get the following error:

"Dungeon Seige Critical Error:
D3D Initialisation Failure: Dungeon Seige was unable to properly create a 3D graphics device.

If you are attempting to run in a window, make sure your desktop is set to a bitdepth support by your video card.

Try using 16-bit High Colour mode, as it is supported by most video cards."

I set my PC to 16bit colour and the error was still the same.

Given that I cannot play any games properly they are all most likely related. Therefore do you think they are hardware or software related?

Have you tried any 3d apps that aren't games, 3dmark etc?

Does full screen video play ok?

Are the refresh rates set higher than the monitor recommended refresh rate? remember that a CRT refresh rate can be much higher than a TFT.

No idea the problem really just throwing things at you to try :)

I would uninstall DirectX and re-install :)

See how that works, as your error refers to D3D - which in essence is DirectX

My monitor is at 60hz, which is the only option for my resolution (1650 x 1050) and I haven't tried to 'force' any other refresh rates via Catalyst.

Full screen video *just checks* ....hmm.. DID play a few days ago, but just gives me a black screen with the sound playing, in both full screen and windowed mode (tried in PowerDVD and WMP). Well I suppose that gives me a time frame. I'm sure the only thing I've done since then is update my drivers to 7.12. I'll try a System Restore and the suggest option of reinstalling DirectX and let you know how it went.

I've just gone back to the 7.10 drivers for my Radeon which seems to solve the video-playback issues, and I've reinstalled DirectX, but as far as gaming is concerned, nothing is solved.

Does anyone have any further suggestions?

Too many variables at this stage - format your hard drive and do a clean install. Make sure you get up to date motherboard drivers and install them before anything else, and that your memory timings are ok in your bios.

The more you install / uninstall stuff the messier it'll get otherwise.
