Problems with Vista and Wireless

No matter what I do I just can’t get stable wireless networking in Windows Vista. Sometimes I cant connect at all, sometimes I get disconnected after a few minutes of use, other times it works for several hours. But every time I do get disconnected I get one of the following three situations:

  1. I can see the network on the list of available networks and it has full signal, I click connect and it says almost straight away without even trying to connect “unable to connect to the network”.
  2. The network does not show up on the list of available networks despite having the laptop right next to the router.
  3. I can see the network and connect to it, but it will say that I am connected to “unidentified network” and I will be unable to use the internet.

But no matter what happens it never reconnects again properly for ages, sometimes hours. During this time I have tried all the obvious things such as restarting the PC, restarting the router, disabling and enabling the network adapter, re-configuring and setting up the connection, running the Vista network diagnostics tool, you name it I’ve done it.

I have tried changing the router with no luck, I have tried moving the router to a different room, I have tried changing the channels on the router in case something else was interfering with the signal, I have tried it with all wireless security disabled, I have tried another laptop. All without luck.

Today I formatted one of the laptops and the first thing I did upon install was try the wireless, and the problem was still there. I really dont know what else I can do.

What are the makes / models of the router / laptop / wireless cards etc.

The two routers are a BT Home Hub and a Netgear DG834N Rangemax Next.

The laptops are an HP 530 with a Broadcom wireless card, and an Acer (don’t have it here right now to get details)
