Problems with windows 7 installation.

k, burning memtest now.
What and how do i do memtest, and if something is wrong how do i go about fixing it :-s
Is this going to be broken hardware/faulty or are things not compatable :(
Or is it like changing settings in the bios :'(

IIRC you just put the disc in, boot off it and it will start testing the memory.

Seeing as this is looking like a hardware issue, it'd be good to know what hardware you have in there? Post the spec and we can go from there.

Stick the memtest disc in your drive on boot, and it should boot straight to it. Just set it running and leave it! If it flags any errors, I'm afraid that it's time for some RAM based fun. How much RAM do you have?

Effectively, you need to try each stick of RAM individually, and leave memtest running for a decent length of time on each (an hour or two at least). If it flags any errors on that stick of RAM, you then need to move it to another RAM slot in the motherboard, to determine whether it's the stick or the motherboard that's faulty.

It's then RMA time I'm afraid.

What I tend to do is to run Windows' own memory diagnostic tool (it's in Administrative Tools in the Vista menu) before memtest, as it has a considerably shorter run cycle, so if I can get it to tell me which stick is faulty, I'll have saved myself a lot of time!

EDIT: Just realised you won't have an OS on the system to run the Windows tool from. Try downloading the tool found here: I haven't tried it out, but assume that it's the same one.

Cool. First question: have you set the memory voltage? That RAM is designed to run at 2.1 volts, so it might not work properly if you have it at the auto setting, which tends to be 1.8.

Well on the plus side you only have 2 sticks to test; I've done it in the past for a mate with 6...was there all night :(

Bung memtest or the Windows tool on, and start off with both sticks to see if it brings out any errors. As soon as it does (if it does), you might as well stop the program, switch off your PC, and tug out one of the sticks. Then run it on each individual one to discover which has errors.

That said, you'll probably find that OCZ will want both sticks back anyway if they came as a set, so if you do discover a problem, there may not be much point in finding out which stick its on.

EDIT: That's strange about the monitor not picking anything up. Try unplugging it for a minute or so, then plugging it back in and powering up again.

I have a hunch that this isn't faulty, just not configured right. Have you set the memory voltage, or is it still at the default?

I assume that the changing of the memory voltages was what he had done when this happened...I may have assumed wrong?

Now the pc turns on but the monitor isnt picking anything up?
Also holding the power button wont turn it off...

k, got a pic on screen now.
Has normal bios stuff then says BOOTMGR is missing, press crtl ald delet to restart.
Should i do this, or just put the memtest boot in?
Havent altered voltage yet, should i chage to 2.1?

Aha. I think this is most likely the problem. I'd change that before you do anything else

Go into the BIOS, find the voltage settings, set DRAM voltage to 2.1 or +0.3, save and exit.

Then you can either Memtest or just try the Win7 install again.

is this the voltage i change, or a different part?

only voltage bit i can find for the ram :-s
What should i put it as? given the options

I assume that your mobo is putting 1.8v through it as default. You have a choice between leaving it as it is, and not having it working, or upping it by 0.5v, potentially having it working, but possibly (but probably not) frying your RAM.

If it were me, I'd risk it. However, it's your choice I'm afraid :)
