Last few days I've been having problems with the WRT54GS router running in our shared house with the wireless dropping out every so often. The router has been flashed with the Tomato firmware (latest version) to utilise the QoS functionality it offers (to couter housemates' BitTorrent addiction) and has been running for 3 years without any major issues.

I've tried rebooting it, & tweaking the wireless settings (changing the wireless channel etc.) but it still seems flaky. Any ideas or is it foobar?

If it is foobar what would be the viable replacement for it, bearing in mind that the newer revision WRT routers have less RAM and run VXWORKS rather than Linux software :/

it's worth trying to 'clear nvram' then setup the router, solved problems i've had with one :)

now i do it after each one i upgrade to tomato

if it's bust

get a WRT54GL and Tomato

I have a WRT54GL running DD-WRT and I'm very happy with it.

Recently I had an issue with massive interference from a new wired PC in my house. Every time I transferred at full tilt between two wired PCs all my wireless connections would drop.

It seems the new PC was interfering with the signal, I moved it to a new location and all the problems went away. Only ever happened when transferring at full 100mbit speeds though. Must be a lot of RFI from the new box. For a while I suspected the router had failed, I tried fiddling with the settings with no benefit.

If you have recently added new computers I'd recommend trying to move them around to see if you have a similar issue.
