My girlfriends dad got an HP Pavillion s7710.uk, I't comes with Vista basic installed. He wants XP on so i've formatted the hard drive and installed his old copy.

All the hardware installed ok but the onboard graphics, the HP website says it has an ATI200M chipset but the only drivers on their site for that model are for Vista. When i install them it says they are for vista only.

I've downloaded the latest catalyst drivers from ATI but when installing it stops with a message saying it couldn't find the hardware the driver is for.

The Vista install has been wiped and there is no way to get it back, if i can't get this sorted i'll have to buy a new copy of vista to install and tell him i cant get XP on it for him.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply.

When i try that prog the driver installation fails with the error message "Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system. Setup will now exit" when i click ok another error message appears "Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup"

The driver i downloaded was definatley the WinXP one. It's as if it's not ATI graphics in there.

You shouldn't need to buy a new copy of Vista, your girlfriend's dad already has an OEM licence, whether you formatted the drive or not.

I've tried that modder program with the driver only download direct from the ATI site and the package Jleo linked to. In both cases i'm getting error messages.

"Setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating system. Setup will now exit"

When i click ok.

"Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup"

It's as if it's not an ATI graphics chip in there

We don't have an install CD though so we would have to buy one anyway

They should have provided a DVD, provided a restore DVD or should provide one if you ask.

Or you could use any other Vista DVD you have kicking about. They're all the same.

I've used that Modder tool with ATI drivers before and it always worked perfectly. You have used the tool to alter the ATI drivers before you install them haven't you?

Tips and Tricks:
If for some reason the installer does not install you're card try the following:
Go to the device manager, select the currently installed card and choose update driver.
Select the option to display a list of devices.
Select HAVE DISK, and specify the files under C:\ati\support\...\driver\xxx.INF
if you extracted it to the default location that is.

Sorry about the tardy reply, i thought this thread had been deleted because hp is a competitor or something, i didn't notice it had been moved :o

I was following all the instructions with the modder program and using different driver packs but with no success at all. Eventually i bought Vista for my own pc and installed it back on his using the key on the side of his case. I'm installing it on mine today.

Vista picks up all the hardware in his pc on installation, i just cant get the graphics card drivers to install on XP. I've told her dad he will just have to get used to it :D
