probs with bf2, please help.

i'm have probs with this game, i've just done a fresh install of xp and thought i'd put this back on. i downloaded the 1.41 patch from xfire installed that with no probs, great i thought all's well, untill i choose a server.

when it was optimising my setting it got the geometry part and at 62% complete the games just crashed so i tried it again and again and again, everytime i load it it crashes at that point and its doin my nut in, to make matters worse single player works fine.

my spec is amd3800, 2gig, ati3850 and a creative audigy 2 zs, i've tried 8.1, 8.2 and 8.3 ati drivers and my sound card has the lastest ones installed.

can anyone please help, i'm going insane.

all i can find to help is

Patching

Note: I would recommend always using the full patches rather than the incremental patches, they are a lot less buggy.
Just BF2.
1) Install BF2. 2) Patch to the latest version.

BF2 + BF2:SF

1)For those that have BF2:SF with version 1.12.
a) Install BF2.
b) Install Special Forces – SF will automatically patch to 1.1, and then install itself; thus installing patch 1.12.
c) Patch to the latest version – Either 1.12-latest (incremental) or the latest full patch. 2)For those that have BF2:SF with version 1.2.0
a) Install BF2.
b) Install Special Forces – SF will automatically patch to 1.1, and then install itself; thus installing patch 1.2.
c) Patch to the latest version – Either ‘1.2 to latest’ (incremental) or the latest full patch.
BF2 + BF2:SF + BF2:EF

1) Install BF2
2) Install BF2:SF
3) Patch to version 1.21 (I think)
4) Install BF2:EF
5) Patch to the latest version
BF2 + BF2:EF

1) Install BF2
2) Patch to 1.21 (I think)
3) Install BF2:EF

other than that try manually updating Punkbuster, or giving the exe/folder full admin rights

yes i had many problems with bf2 in the past. best solution is to try a reinstall of bf2 and then restart pc and then install patch and then restart and then try it.
