i have a machine about 3 years old which was amd xp2800....about 3 weeks ago i noticed everything was getting very slow. i put it down to my disk very full of rubbish load of progs installed. that was untill today when i did a check to find the proccesor is running at 1200 it even says this the in bios. what can cause this .....can someone help me.
eric

Had a problem like this, turned out to be the motherboard running at 133Mhz FSB. When tried to set the FSB back to 166Mhz the mobo wouldnt boot. Check your BIOS settings.

thanks guys but ive been in the bios......amibios setup utility ver 3.31....it gives the usual time date flopy ide devices which i can access the rest i cant as it will not arrow down to any of the others it just twlls me bios v is k7s8x as is the motherboard proc type , speed, cache sizeand mem....ive checked motherboard book says fsb should be 333 but i cant tell in the bios ive checked all the other sections in bios but they all just the usual things.

do u mean resetting the bios defaults if thats what u mean no i havnt but i was going to give that a try but i want to get my stuff of the system first before i mess about with anything...tnk again talkie
eric

Resetting the cmos will do no damage to your windows install. (consult your motherboard manual for cmos location)
You could alternativly just pop the battery out of the motherboard for about 5 minutes then put it back in to reset the bios to defaults.
Like i said just make a note of the settings you DO have in the BIOS, so if anything does go wrong you can just put the old settings back in & be able to boot into windows.
Your last option if all else fails is to flash the BIOS to a newer version.

cheers talkie... i tries restting defaults but made no diff ill try the cmos next and ive never flashed the bios before so i wouldnt know what to do but ill need to try summit or its for the bin

i used to get that with my 3000 it turned out to be flat battery like some said reset cmos normally does it just move jumper to positon for few minutes and reboot normally works, used to work for me.

hi dg thank but ive tried all these things still the same i think im going to have to investigate this flashing the bios as i said earlier ive never done it so anything is worth a try as its oviously an old bios version cheers anyway eric

HI

According to this manual

http://download.asrock.com/manual/K7S8X.pdf

there are two options for your board.

1) go into the BIOS setup - [Advanced] tab and change the [CPU host frequency] from 'By Jumper' to 'Manual'. Then set the actual frequency to 166 Mhz

2) Change the Jumpers on the board to set the default FSB to 166Mhz. This is shown on page 11 of the above manual. For this to be effective the BIOS [Advanced] tab should be set to 'By Jumper'

hi deco had a look at ** 2 options and thought oh dear dont fancy doin no 2 as i have the manual on disk for m/board and would have been a bit scary but the good news i tries option 1 first and bingo all i had to do was change from jumper to manual it was already set at 166mhz rebooteed and running at 2.09 which is about right for a xp 2800 i think many thanks to all who helped and again well done deco. the last thing i would like to know is ..... what would cause this to happen cause i certainld change anything in dbios eric

back again problem still exists. tried changing battery but sometimes machine boots up at xp 1250 other times as xp 2800 if i go in and change the host frequescy setting to manual from jumpers. it sometimes when booting up says the frequency setting is not working hit f2 to change settings or 10sec to reset bios defaults then i get 2 beeps instead of 1 beep when booting up. i can tell whether its going to run at 2800 or 1250 by the time it takes to load windows

Can only get it to run as xp 2800 occasionally and when it does its ok even after numerous reboots but as soon as switch it off for any lenght of time ir reverts back to xp 1250 will flashing the bios work or is it a nackered mboard or processor
eric

switch it off for any lenght of time ir reverts back to xp 1250

try a new battery for the cmos - sounds like the old one is dead and its not giving the power needed to store the settings

tnx for ** comment viking great help....anyway flashed the bios made no diff i tried setting the host controller to manual and took out the jumpers and it is running at 2200 xp running at 133mhz. seems very stable even after a period unplugged. so tried putting jumpers back in and run at 166 mhz some times boots at 2800 xp sometimes at 1250 xp nearly always at 1250 when off for half an hour so anyone else with any ideas done all of above cleared cmos flashed bios changed battery set jumpers to manual???????????

A weak power supply could cause the problems you're describing, what are the voltages like in the BIOS or in software such as Speedfan on the 3.3v, 5v & 12v rails? If any are out of 3% tollerance or if its a generic PSU it could be the problem.

Sounds likely as you say a new CMOS battery didn't solve it.
