Process Manager, 25%

I sometimes get processes max'ing at 25% in process manager, my guess its only using one core. I have a i5 750 @ 3.8Ghz. And just confused what could be causing this.

I think if there not multi-threaded then then they will only use 1 core hence the max of 25 % from a quad.

Precisely - most (older) applications were never designed to run on multiple cores at once and there's just no way to make them. Well, correction, you could make them jump around each core in turn, but you can't make them use 4 at once

Infact windows already does just this on a lot of apps, unless they are specifically coded to lock to a single physical core. And even when a core appears to be 100% loaded in the task manager, in reality, it still has idle execution units, even with Hyperthreading i7's.. its really very hard to utilize 100% of a cpu's potential.

Some games manage to load multiple threads fairly well, but a lot of games still make use of a single threaded graphics engine, which really will just use 1 core at a time, (which windows will shuffle between cores, which does give the cpu a better heat profile)

I believe Intel TAT manages to use more of the CPU than anything else I've encountered - although it may be simply opening every transistor in it to pour as much current through as physically possible. Either way, that beast always took my old core2duo up 5 degrees beyond a prime 95 max stress test :S
