Hey all wonder if someone could point me in the right direction please im looking to get an HTPC. But what processor would i need to play 30gig BR rips MKV's with HD audio and at 24p many thanks

Depends on the software you're using, most can offload the work onto the GPU to handle the decoding so the CPU doen't need to do that much. Even a cheap Pentium with it's Intel HD Graphics should be enough with the right player.

I found MPC-BE with LAV filters able to handle 720p content on an Intel Atom just fine, this was about 5 years ago so recent stuff should be fine with 1080p content.

As above said better to off load the video to say a relatively cheap gpu (nvidia 210/610 or AMD equivalent) than spend loads on a cpu. I've found even a Haswell i3 can struggle a bit with certain HD x264 files with onboard 4000 graphics running the show. It can vary loads but imho using gpu is cheaper. All depends on your budget and what you might already have.

im looking to get an HTPC just for kodi and playing my media like 1080p movies just don't know what to look for really my budget is up to £300 if it can be done lower that be good i don't need windows i already have an i5 htpc in our bedroom and a laptop so just something for the tv downstairs nothing to flash

I used to use a Celeron NUC running openelec and this played all 1080p MKV files without issue.

At the moment I am using a I3 NUC with Kodi.

Just after something that does the job for the main tv wanna keep cost down if i can cause spent a fortune on the other set up thats only 5 months old so nothing to fancy

Celeron works fine if you're using GPU acceleration. My Sandy Bridge G530 handles everything up to 1080i/p, including 10-bit encodes.
