I'm looking for advice on what's the current best processor (and motherboard?) for a personal system that'll get used for general stuff (web browsing, iplayer, tv card), but that I'll also want to use for compiling largish things like linux, perl, or ghc under linux. It won't be used for gaming. Is a 2500k really the obvious choice, or perhaps the phenom II X6 is better since it has more threads, or maybe I should just use a Llano A8 since it's cheap and good enough.

Any input?

i do the same thing the 2600k with HT is about 30% faster than the i5.

and compiling depending on what compiler your using its about 35% faster.

x6 are slow. about 40% slower.
