An i5 processor has two cores and 4 threads so the OS will think that the system has 4 cores, is this correct? Also would the two cores have two threads each so 2x the amount of data is being sent on each core so it can distribute power to multiple applications instead of just one?

My drawing explains how I see it.

Also Core Duo 2 has two cores and threads, one thread per core?

Hyperthreading doesn't mean 2x the data can be sent....it merely uses spare cycles on a core to execute another thread. So if you have a dual threaded application using 100% of the available cpu cycles on a hyperthreaded dualcore, then the other 2 hyperthreads won't be good for anything.

a lot of application ran slower or with almost no benefit with HT on only P4's..

are there any comparisons to with the new core2 CPU's running HT and non HT?
