Hello all, just under 2 years ago I purchased the Gigabyte EX58-UD5 motherboard and i7 920 Intel Processor.

I would like to upgrade the processor using this board which is socket 1366 and was wondering what a viable upgrade would be????

I had some thoughts on the i7 960, would this be a substantial upgrade????

Thanks for any help here

Hi,

It's really not worth the upgrade. The i7 920 is still a very good CPU, what has made you think you need an upgrade?

+1

The i7 960 is a Bloomfield quad core CPU, just like the i7 920. If your particular i7 920 is a D0 stepping one then it is basically the same chip as the i7 960, just with a slightly lower maximum multiplier.

Also, just because it has a higher maximum multiplier does not mean that it will overclock any higher.

If you want a meaningful CPU upgrade then the only half-decent option is a Gulftown Hex core like the i7 970/980/980X/990X, but these tend to be rather expensive (even second-hand). Instead, the best upgrade option is to wait for a few months until Intel Ivy Bridge is released and buy a new board an CPU. The prices of these are expected to be around the same as what the s1155 Sandy Bridge launched at - so really good value considering the performance/features they are expected to offer.
