Rarely does a product instantly live up to the description, but...

I've recently needed to do a small bit of product photography, so borrowed a cheapo light tent and 2 small tripod continuous lights that I think originated from ebay.

The issue was that the lights weren't great (dim), and in the end I got 2 of my studio strobes out, setting it up with a light meter to get the kind of shots I wanted.. However that's a bit of a faff when you just want 5 or 6 quick product shots for ebay, or the like, so gave the light tent kit back the next day and thought it not worth the hassle.

However, I found the Sanoto MK50LED light box on ebay for under £80 which seemed to tick most of my boxes, so decided to give it a whirl.

The idea was to get a medium sized light box that I could leave assembled and needed no setup or messing around, with LED lighting for consistency and low heat etc.

It arrived today, I took 10 mins to assemble it, and just using my Note 4 handheld, I have to say it's exactly what I was hoping it would be!

The interior space is 50cm x 35cm x 35cm with a diffuse top mounted LED bar. It has a hole in the top if you want an overhead shot, and an extra panel you can put in the front to reflect more light with an oval for the lens to poke through. It's just the right size that I can leave it assembled and the lighting is all built in, so no setup time required.

And just using my Note 4 handheld with +1.0 exposure and spot metering seemed to give quick and dirty OK shots, I'll get the DSLR out later, but actually if I was just churning out stuff for eBay, the phone is more convenient.

These are all straight from the phone:

Obviously not the perfect quality a professional product photographer would aim for, but good enough for casual use IMO.

Nice, but could you add some lady models to make it more interesting.

:D

Funny you should mention that..

My daughter wants to flog some old dolls on Ebay, apparantly some are worth more than that usual 50p at a car boot sale, so I showed her how to use the lightbox..

Unless you meant some form of other lady model? :p

Results look very smart indeed. Are there any tools required for assembly? It'd be nice to have it easily collapse to store away when not needed.

No tools required, just 5 ally rods with plastic knurled knobs that easily screw/unscrew on each end, it takes 5 minuses to assemble, everything is flat pack.

I'd say a laptop would be too big.. You might just fit it in, but the infinity curve would probably get squashed, and I think you'd have to edit the result to get rid of the side joins, the max sized item that seemed to photo quite well was about 20-30cm x 20 x 20
