Hello folks, just thought I'd post a problem that's occurred since the benchmarks of the Bulldozer processor.
Here's the deal, I am currently running a Phenom 9950 processor ( quite old ) in an M2N68-VM motherboard, now I bought a pre-built desktop bundle and within 2 months ( or seconds ) my build was well out dated, Ive recently started some minor vidoe encoding etc and would like to start some desktop gaming, I havnt had any problems with the Phenom and had originally planned on upgrading a few months ago to a 1090T, but car problems stopped that and I decided that as bulldozer was around the corner why not wait, this way I'll have the latest processor
Was thinking of the FX-8150 or so, in a Asus Crosshair Formula V, top notch mothertboard, allowing for overclocking even for someone with limited knowledge with all the bells and whistles and a good chipset.
Now that Bulldoser isnt even as good as my lowest expectations of it im in a bit of a jam?

Do I continue to buy AMD and get the Formula V but put in a 1090T - which has been out a wee bit now.... or do I flip sides and go for and i5 2500k/i7 2500k etc

Keeping in mind I've a fair knowledge of AMD processors, motherboards and chipsets from my general browsing over past few years.....and absolulty 0 knowledge on any intel motherboard or chipsets :-/.

Any helpfull comments?

Well I wouldn't worry about your lack of knowledge regarding intel. I have an i7-2600k in an Asrock Professional P67 mobo, I used the auto overclock feature to get it to 4.8ghz @ 1.38vcore under load which is perfectly safe.

If I was you I would buy a P67 or Z68 motherboard that has the auto overclock feature. I know Asus and Asrock mobo's have this feature. Alongside either an i5-2500k or an i7-2600k, they are both excellent cpu's, certainly the best buy at the moment and very simple to overclock.

I went from a Asus crosshair IV with a 1090T @ 4ghz to my 2600k setup and was more than happy with the improvement.

Thanks for the reply and advice, the lack of intel knowledge is mainly on the chipsets - such as p67 or z68 and what functions each have etc, guess I've some more googling to do lol, my main worry is being committing my money to something that risks being outdated lol but a lot seems to be said about i5-2500k so this or i7 seems like a safe bet.

Ok well seriously, I bought P67 before Z68 came out, I also think the Asrock Professional board is one of the best mobo's i've ever owned. I'm experienced in system building and overclocking and have been for a while. The only one I would prefer is the Asus Maximus but I can't justify its cost.

If you want future proof I can more than recommend either a 2600k or 2500k and an Asrock Professional Z68 motherboard. Z68 has PCIE3 and Virtu, not many programs can utilise this properly at the moment but i'm sure its around the corner. Get a decent air cooler alongside these, (I cant recommend i've been on custom water for about 4 years!). I guarantee you will be over the moon with the systems perfomance.

My Specs
[email protected]
Asrock P67 Professional, (would be Z68 if I built now)
8gb Corsair vengeance DDR3 1600mhz C8
Sapphire 2gb 6970
Crucial 64gb SATA3 SSD 64gb for OS
WD Cavier Black SATA3 for everything else
Corsair 850W PSU
Custom water but a decent air cooler will be fine, if in doubt ask OCUK for advise.

I dont think many will disagree that for performance a setup similar to this would be hard to beat at the moment. Although I could go crossfire with another GPU but the flight sims I play can't use it. Something close to the above will not be a dissapointment.

Cheers.

not sure what your budget is... could you give us one? i think you're best option is to go for intel sandy bridge build. they are better than any amd processors and will last further into the future. they're also really easy to overclock and tonnes of people have them, so there'll be loads of people that can help you out.

I jumped to Intel after BD failed to show up last month. It's really easy and after 7 years with AMD, I'm not looking back. That said, the 1090T is still pretty good for gaming, and I've seen them around for £90 since BD came out. So it depends on budget really.

What is it that you are planning to do with the PC?

I think for some applications the days of hardware being outmoded within a year are over (for now). Windows 7 is lighter than Vista and Windows 8 is predicted to require roughly similar hardware. This means that my 1.7GHz Core 2 Duo laptop which was designed for XP and is now nearly 5 years old should happily be able to run Windows 8 and should do me fine for web browsing and office applications for another few years - as long as the mobo or whatever else doesn't give out.

It depends on your requirements though. If you are encoding, then more performance is always welcome. If you are gaming then I would have thought that a 1090t or 2500k should do you fine for several years - it is all about graphics cards really anyway (or so I have heard - not really a gamer myself).

Thanks for your many replys - I mostly watch movies on my desktop atm lol, dabbled into OC but hit some bumps ive dabbled in pc gaming and video encoding, think I mite go into it more, and personally I had aimed to get a bulldozer so I could be furture proofed XD fool, anyways Ive been looking at a lot of spec etc and I "think" I mite go for an i7 with the maximus iv extreme-z, this way If (or when) I decide to use my desktop more I will have the ability to do so (and after I spend that amount of money on a desktop I'l damn well use it for frigging everything lol).

As for my budget, it sorta really depends on what I feel comfortable parting with, and as my bday/christmas is coming I can get a few things from family etc leaving really just the i7 and mobo to buy myself. ...Still pondering over the massive amount more this will be for the top-notch Intel platform compared to how much my top-notch amd build had aimed to be.

Ps anyone know if ther's to me a R.O.G. Maximus V amytime soon? (seeing as ther was a crosshair formula V out)

Apologies for my crappy post - but tis late and long enough night at work :)
