Hi all, I record quite a bit on sky+ but im away from home a lot.

I have a haupage tv tuner card in a pc (xp) with composite input that I used to use to record freeview via media centre.

Im wondering what other software is out there (freeware if poss) that I could use to record video manually that I feed in from my sky+ box so I can take the programs with me when im away, media center on xp seems a bit long winded?

thanks in advance

thanks asim, just gave it a whirl it, it appears to work but doesnt play back on other machines and is about 1gb per minute of film - is there a simple way to compress into another format?

I think the default codec is a lossless one. Which is why it's 1GB per minute.

When capturing TV, you need to deinterlace it for best results. There's some info on how to do this HERE. Look at sections 7 and 8.

thanks mate, it looks so long-winded though :( I was hoping for something I could just hit record, go away and do something then come back, load onto memory stick and take away with me

You could use something like Xilisoft or Handbrake (or one of the many other "video converters") to convert it to a more popular format (eg MP4).

I'm can't remember any other software which will capture the video other than Virtualdub. There must be a setting in Virtualdub which lets you change the encoding setting so you can capture straight to MP4.

thing is the hauppage card was a factory fitted so didnt come with any specialized software.

spose I could convert the recorded tv afterwards. I cant seem to work out how to get Virtualdub to encode on the fly?

Go here: http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/site/support/support_support.html

Select your card from the list, if you don't know it just select a close guess and you should be able to download the software. Since you're on XP there shouldn't be any problems with installing it. The newer versions for Vista and Win7 require you have the original disc.

EDIT: OK, forget that. Seems they've all been updated to V7 which you won't be able to use. Can't find any link for V6 which is the version you'll need.
