3rd rock...
Hello all!

I want to backup the "Aircraft" folder in my Microsoft Flight Simulator installation. Its a hefty 28GB and unfortunately I do not have a DVD writer :( It is backed up on an external HDD but I would like it on optical media for extra safety.

Each CD is 700MB.

Is there some freeware software that I could use that will break the 28GB folder into 700MB chunks so then I can just burn off CDs (for the next 2 months lol) I started to do it manually but its the most tedious mundane task ever

I tried Winrars archive function but it crashes my computer (even Safe Mode was frozen).

Thanks very much!

Buy a DVD writer, they can be had for filthy cheap these days, well worth the investment if you're going to back up that much data I reckon.

*edit*

Theres a samsung one in This Week Only for £22.27 inc VAT! :)

I'd be more concerned with the fact that a simple application like Winrar crashes your machine. Might this be why you need to back up?

Failing all else you can put it on a spare HDD (one of your friends has one in his basment, I'm sure). Got an iPod? That could do the job.

Thanks all for the suggestions!

I will get a DVD player when Im back from vacation! Good plan that!

HJ Split looks like a nice app, Im gonna get it thanx for the link!!

My computer is stable as a rock - until I used Winrars archive function. I probably did something wrong. Anyways I got it to create a self-extracting archive which it did.

Then Windows froze. In Safe Mode too. I had to boot into SM with cmd prompt only and delete the errant archive after which all went back to normal

Edit:- Will eventually learn to read the whole bloody post before replying

Found a wicked program!

Just thought Id point you all to this *free* program I stumbled across. Its called Cobian and it ROCKS!

Very well designed and most of all - blindingly easy to use. It can back up your files uncompressed or compressed into .zip format...and yes you can specify how large the files need to be (the 700MB setting is preset!).

Heres the best part:

Its backed up my entire 28GB folder into just 7 zip files!!!!!!!! :) Each is a 700MB file ready to be burned. Woot! Doing this manually was gonna make me burn like 40 CDs!

If you have'nt already you really must check out this app:

Dual layer DVD writers only cost about £25 now, no reason not to own one. You will actually save money in the long run because the cost of DVD media has dropped right down now. A blank DVD costs only a little more than a blank cd and yet it holds more than 6 times as much data. 16x DVD burning is also faster than 52x CD burning.

So basically, by moving to DVD burning, you:

-Save Money (cheaper media cost per gigabyte)
-Save Time (quicker burning)
-Save Space (1dvd takes less room than 6cds)
-Save Hassle (Less disc changing)

Yea you are right HangTime :)

I've decided to get a DVD player. Im just doing the CD thing now cuz Im travelling for a bit and realised I have backups of nothing lol. Im not backing up the other big folders cuz like u said its just taking too much time and CDs.
