i was using sandboxie until i upgraded to 64 bit vista where it doesnt work :( what is there (free) that i could use instead with the same sort of effect?

It's not free but Acronis True Image has a try and decide feature that allows you to try things and then decide whether you want to commit the changes or discard them. It's also excellent for its main purpose of automatic drive imaging which has saved my bacon on more than one occasion.

If you want a completely isolated environment you could also look at Virtual PC 2007 or any of the other virtual machine options.

ive now downloaded virtual pc 2007 but am confused.... it doesnt seem to come with an OS installed and wants a floppy disk to install it? i dont have a floppy drive...

Click on new to create a new virtual hard disk, once you've done this you can install an OS by using an ISO file or capturing the physical DVD drive and install the OS like its a real computer.

If you Google 'Internet Explorer Application Compatibility VPC Image' you should find a link to some preconfigured VPC images on the Microsoft site. They're licence free but time limited.

when i try to install the os it says i need a floppy disk, also it says my wireless internet card has had some function disabled which means i cant connect to the internet in the virtual pc

You shouldn't need a floppy disk. From the CD menu you can either mount an ISO image or capure a disk that's in the optical drive.

For the network look in the settings and try 'Shared networking (NAT)'.
