I'm getting a new computer next week so was wondering what are good free alternatives to the usual expensive stuff? I'll be downloading these but if you think there's something better out there then I'll give it a blast.

Google Chrome/Firefox
vlc media player
Spotify
Winamp
last.fm
z zip
itunes

Rather than going to download each program individually, that site creates an installer for you. All you do is pick what you want and download the .exe, run it and sit back :)

Mega props to you sir; having to find, download and install all the various bits required to get a new install working correctly can be a proper ballache, thanks muchly for that, it will be very useful :)

I would go with Avira or MSE over Avast for free AV.

Other software you should only look for as you need it. No point in bloating your install with shiny things if you never use it! :)

yes, deffo use MSE, fantastic little app.

Also, for archives, look at PeaZip, I tried it for the first time about a week ago on my new install, it's lightweight, free, easy to use and fast. Works perfectly.

and yes, agree with VLC, great app!
