Programs randomly "crashing"

When useing things like Firefox, WMP, MSN etc there randomly crash and i just have to click "end now" whats going on? seems weird and its anoying now. Any ideas?

could be any number of things, perhaps a corrupt file system, faulty ram, could even be the PSU

guess the first thing to test would be the ram with memtest

I dont have a floppy drive which i need to run memtest, firefox just dies now and closes, i will format tomorow and see if its any different.

Memtest can be run from a bootable cd image so no floppy needed.

If that fails, then use the recovery console by booting from the windows XP cd, which restores system files iirc. Also try virus/spyware scans.
