So I really want to play Skyrim on the pc and my 09 macbook pro really isn't up to the job anymore (can't handle civ5 well) so I have decided to build the cheapest/best pc I can called "The Rimmer, Skyrimmer" (also this is to provide a home for a pc that could one day sit in my pppppowermac project that will remain half finished for many more months)

Tim and his contempt for my mac...

Most things for it iv gotten off the MM to keep cost's down and performance up but getting a cooler and case I like is a pain so I ordered them new :)

Parts:
Msi x58 matx motherboard, 6gig ram and 920 i7

Big Zalman cooler thingy

Ati 6870

Corsair 520w modular psu

Silverstone Temjin TJ08-E

Cool things I have left over - 2 Nocta fans and my 256gig c300 out my mac

Ooo and one mug :D

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Anyway onwards with assembling having fun learning how to use my iphoney to show everyone this :)

Massive cooler attached! Such a difficult thing to assemble...

Psu in the empty shell of the case

Half full, on its side.

It's full! Got to tidy it up (which won't happen till I get my c300 out my mac in a few days).

Thought Id boot it now but it made a HORRIFIC noise and I need to sleep and not get distracted too much by this...

Nice. How much has everything been costing? (if you don't mind me asking)

I dont mind at all. When I started I didn't have a set budget, just a plan to try and keep costs down, speed up and cool looks on the cards.

Cpu + ram was £105 (MM)
Motherboard £66 (b-grade off a competitor)
Cooler £26 (new)
Case £89 (last one from ocuk and I wanted it!)
Psu £40 (MM0
DVD drive £10 (cheap off the net)
6870 £100 (MM)

So in total its been £430 ish to get Skyrim :)

BUILD! BUILD! BUILD! BUILD!

For now its semi done

Nice. I'm trying to do something similar with a mix of old and new. I got CPU and RAM new, but in America so they're the same price as secondhand here.

I'll probably end up getting the mobo new but nearly everything else is used. Shame I can't access the MM yet. :(

Good luck. :)

You don't want to play Skyrim , stick to FM2011!!

Nice looking build dude, more pics to come I hope? :)

Haha! I'v had to stop playing FM completely to get some uni work done...

Will put up more pictures once iv got it booting and set up a hard drive for it :)

Cheers! Im pretty pleased with the overall cost as the performance should be more than good enough to keep me going with some gaming over the next few years (would like to catch up a little)

Good news everyone! The Rimmer Lives!

Worked out the 3 HORRIBLE beeps were to tell me I put the ram in the blue slots instead of the black. Switching them all around got it to post and look confused that there was nothing to do after it which is awesome news.

Now I just have to wait for a new laptop from uni and to get a keyboard (eyes on the apple wired keyboard with a number pad just to play civ2) and I'll be able to do some finished shots and sort out the rest of the cables :D

Here we go! Spent tuesday afternoon doing the cables as after seen a few pictures I realised where all the cables could go:

Pleased with the outcome there (ignore the random stuff on the ssd adaptor, it was £3)

Here is the internals all ready :) (will put the other os ssd in at some point but thats not a priority now as I can play civ)

Here it is in all its glory!

And finally my desk set up now :) (till I get a new uni laptop in a few weeks which will be nicely on the side)

All I have to do now to complete the Rimmer is actually get skyrim... Which wont be till christmas but I can enjoy civ5 and many other games to their full potential till them :)
