Hello!

I have become very interested in computers over the last year, i have recently made, well.. started with a blank dell dimension 8200 case and added all the parts and my first computer was born nothing special but it had what i needed - 40gb hdd 1gb RAM, ati card 256mb and a dvd drive loaded with XP SP3.

But now.. i am looking to expand something bigger.. better more fun and to get that great feeling at the end when you finish.

I have now 4 PC's - not all are finished and 3 i picked up today, as i mention a min ago i have the dell now i have 3 more, a small compaq deskpro and two others i dont know the names but i will get lots of pic and have them up tonight! so check back frequently.

Action plan!

first of all i need to choose one case out of the 4.
Then what i am going to do is cut it for extra fans and things like this but.. me being a noob i don't have ANY tools so i need to buy the basics for doing this - im clueluess on it so help is very appreciated. all i will be doing is cutting computer cases.
Then i will be painting it [not necassary atm] but if there is some cheap paint - again i don't know what to get.
i will then have my case done pretty much.
Now the insides..
I will use the 40gb and i have another 10gb drive i can use.
Also an ATI Radeon 9200, dvi, vga, tv 256mb card i can use - this does not have a fan atm so i may need one - recommendations welcome.
DVD Sorted.
Floppy - i have - maybe put one in machine.
PSU - i have a dell power supply - any good?
Also a DAN - untested as of yet.
now.. Motherboard - OH NO! i have 4 motherboard 1 in each machine which i will now have to pick one.. the dell dimension is a 4400 board and take DDR ram, 1gb max [pc2100] and has a P4 1.80Ghz init.
Others i am not sure of yet as i havnt had a propper look.. i will get a lot of pics up tonight and edit this post then hopefully you's can help me decide!

Accessories sorted -
Keyboard, Mouse, Speakers, Monitor ect.

Also is it worth me buying some LED fans or just normal and fan sizes ect and as i mentioned before ill need to buy all the tools.
When i get the tools im looking for quite a bit of modding / moving things around and custom bits.

I think this is all, if i've missed something please say.

Thanks all in advance for your great help.
Please check back.
Finally got them all up! - The 3 PCs.

Ok, first things first, do you have a budget?

From what i can see all those 4 computers are old and i doubt theres anything thta can be reused, apart from maybe the 40Gb hard drive and the ATI 256Mb card, assuming the ATI card is PCI-E

What will the PC be used for? As a basic spec you could go for this :

Asus Vintage V3-P5G31 Barebones System - Intel Core 2 Duo (LGA775) £79.99
(£91.99) £79.99
(£91.99)
Intel Pentium Dual-Core E2200 "LGA775 Core 2" 2.20GHz (800FSB) - Retail £49.99
(£57.49) £49.99
(£57.49)
Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 250GB SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM £33.99
(£39.09) £33.99
(£39.09)
OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £15.99
(£18.39) £15.99
(£18.39)
Samsung SH-S223F/BEBE 22x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM £13.99
(£16.09) £13.99
(£16.09)
Sub Total : £193.95
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DHL Select Next Day (Delivered Mon-Fri)
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £8.99
VAT is being charged at 15% VAT : £30.44
Total : £233.38

If you want to use one of those cases it will have to be the 3rd one (with the greeney-blue front) as thats the only one big enough to take a normal(ish) psu (its a bummer, me n a mate confronted this problem last summer and gave into an old monster of a server case)

Dont know what else to do, other than say keep taht compaq and wack linux on it :D (just coz it looks cool)

Yep, gone with the blue one:

Stripped it all - everything a good clean now looking for a dremel or jigsaw, wich would you recommend.
The small compaq will POST along with the Blue one so they are ok just old hardware.

I may be looking into a new mobo though as these are P3's

I dont want a new case and i have a DVD-RW drive so thats good, recommended cheap future proof motherboards?

The fans have come! also cut the back of the case near mobo I/O plate to put them both there as exhausts.
