need to rebuild my family server that is being used for cctv cameras and general streaming as it is currently using an old p3 and 256mb ddr ram ;) (i remember when we first got it in 2002 i think it cost £400 bit less than that now ;) ). so a quick look in the loft at all my old bits of kit and found some reasonably good stuff.

all the bits I salvaged from the loft

  • intel e6400 @2.13
    gigabyte GA-G41M-Combo mobo
    4gb Kingston 800MHz ram
120gb 2.5" hdd (taking from an old laptop)
    ati 1300pro 256mb ddr2 gpu (what a beast ;) )
    80mm fan

bits taken out the old server

  • 250gb ide hdd
cd rom drive (yes cd rom going to make installing windows tricky ;) )
    cctv camera pci adapter

parts I had to buy

the case and cooler should come tomorrow so i will start the build on Saturday :)

Pretty sure that's the board my brother has got, also pretty sure the on-board graphics is more powerful than that card. Would be well off checking that out.

yeh that's a good point because they are both quick old it is hard to find much on them so will do a test with the gpu and one with on-board when the system is up and running to see.

Still a recent board that though. Bought my brother's for him about a year ago. The on-board graphics is a Intel GMA X4500. Enough for youtube videos so for server use, should be fine? I'd avoid having a separate graphics card in my server at all cost, keep the power usage down!

after a 3am building sesh this morning it is up and running :)

was quite surprised at how tidy this case looked not bad for the price

sorry about the blurry pics i was tired ;P after installing windows i noticed that the cpu temps where on the super high side 55 at idle so i swapped the cooler 180 and used some mx4 dropped it to 38 still high at load 64 but for a £5 cooler not bad i brought a couple of 60mm fans off the bay to use as exhaust should shave a few degrees hopefully :)

Do you have a wattage meter?

Do you also have a multimeter?

I was wondering how much wattage the thing used and also how good the voltages where on the PSU.

It looks quite nice.

i have a multimeter lying around somewhere if you want me to fish it out. our eon watt meter thing at full load on cpu it runs at ~120w (plus about 20 for when gpu runs 100%) so its nothing really at idle just recording the cameras its only like 40-70w

and i have managed to sort the temperatures issue by lowering the cpu vcore from 1.35v to 1.06v (prime stable for 4 hours) it has knocked about 15 degree off and only hits 50degrees load :) and will use a lot less power too

plus guys i am having an odd problem with my server monitor an old 17" lcd thing it boots up fine and have a display when the graphics drivers are not installed (both on board or gpu) but as soon as they are installed i get an message on the monitor saying "input not supported" i have made sure that it is running at 50hz and 1024*768 but still nothing plug it into my monitor and it works fine :/
